Running Shopify free gifts on POS and online store channels under one campaign name can hide important differences. A gift that appears automatically in an online cart may need a different trigger, staff action, or discount setup at a retail checkout.

Consistency does not require identical software behavior. It requires the same customer promise, eligibility math, gift value, inventory policy, and exception rules wherever the promotion is advertised.

Decide whether the offer is truly omnichannel

Start with one of three scopes:

  1. Online only
  2. Selected retail locations only
  3. Online and selected retail locations

Publish the scope wherever customers see the offer. If it is online only, do not place the same promotion sign beside a POS register. If only some locations participate, name them or provide a store list.

An omnichannel offer should answer these questions the same way:

  • Which products or spend qualify?
  • Is the threshold calculated before or after discounts?
  • Which gift does the customer receive?
  • Is there a limit per order or customer?
  • What happens when the gift is out of stock?
  • What is the return policy?

Compare Shopify free gifts on POS and online store checkouts

Shopify's native Buy X get Y discounts have channel and plan considerations. Customers must add the qualifying and discounted products to the cart manually. Shopify documents that POS Lite locations cannot apply native Buy X get Y discounts at retail checkout, while POS Pro locations can use them when configured for POS.

Third-party app behavior also depends on how the app integrates with POS. Do not assume that an online storefront cart rule will appear on the POS smart grid or retail cart. Confirm the current channel support for every app involved in the campaign.

AutoCart is designed around storefront cart rules. If your retail workflow does not support the same automatic rule, create a documented POS procedure that produces the same offer outcome.

Use one promotion specification for both channels

Create a short source-of-truth document with these fields:

Setting Campaign value
Qualifying channel Online plus named POS locations
Qualifying products Product or collection list
Threshold basis Merchandise after product discounts
Gift Exact product and variant
Quantity limit One per order
Dates and time zone Start and end
Out-of-stock action Approved substitute or no gift
Returns Published gift policy

Use that document to build the online rule and the POS staff procedure. It keeps the two implementations from drifting.

Configure the online store experience

For the online store:

  1. Create the AutoCart rule for the qualifying spend, quantity, product, collection, or customer tag.
  2. Set the gift product and quantity.
  3. Configure automatic removal if the cart stops qualifying.
  4. Add clear cart messaging with the threshold and limit.
  5. Confirm how the gift behaves with discount codes.
  6. Test the cart page, cart drawer, and checkout.

If customers choose among gifts, verify that the picker works on the theme and device types your shoppers use. The guide to letting customers choose a free gift on Shopify covers that setup.

Build a POS procedure staff can follow quickly

Retail staff need a short decision path, not a copy of the online setup guide.

The register checklist should say:

  1. Confirm that the location participates.
  2. Add qualifying products to the cart.
  3. Check the threshold using the documented discount basis.
  4. Add the approved gift variant.
  5. Apply the configured POS discount or promotion action.
  6. Confirm the gift quantity and final total before payment.
  7. Follow the out-of-stock script when needed.

If the promotion uses a native automatic discount on POS Pro, staff should still know how to verify the result. Shopify POS lets staff review automatic discounts in the cart and remove one for a transaction when necessary.

Restrict custom-discount permissions appropriately. A workaround that gives every staff member broad discount access can create a larger control problem than the campaign solves.

Keep gift inventory visible by location

Online and retail orders may draw from different locations. Decide whether each channel has dedicated gift stock or whether transfers will keep locations supplied.

Track:

  • Opening gift quantity by location
  • Gifts issued by channel
  • Damaged or sample units
  • Transfers between locations
  • Approved substitutions
  • Remaining campaign stock

Do not advertise "while supplies last" as a substitute for inventory planning. Set a stop point that gives staff time to remove signs and lets the online team disable the rule before customers see an unavailable offer.

For operational planning, use the free-gift shipping and fulfillment checklist. Online pickup orders also need the local pickup and delivery gift workflow.

Align customer recognition and limits

A one-per-customer rule is harder across channels because the shopper may use a customer account online and check out anonymously in store. Decide whether staff must attach a customer profile to the POS sale for the offer.

If you promise one gift per customer across channels, use a shared customer record and a campaign-specific redemption marker. Otherwise, describe the rule more narrowly, such as one gift per transaction while supplies last.

Use the same returns policy everywhere

A retail return should not get a different gift decision simply because the original order was online. Write one policy for full returns, partial returns, missing gifts, and exchanges, then translate it into both support and POS procedures.

Train staff to recalculate the remaining qualifying purchase using the original campaign basis. If the customer still meets the threshold, the gift remains valid. If not, follow the published return rule instead of inventing a register-side exception.

Test Shopify free gifts across POS and online store journeys

Before launch, place paired test orders online and at every participating POS configuration.

Test:

  1. Below, at, and above the threshold.
  2. Eligible and excluded products.
  3. Discount combinations.
  4. One gift and attempted duplicate gifts.
  5. Gift out of stock at one location.
  6. Online order with retail pickup.
  7. Return and exchange at a different channel.
  8. Customer recognized online and at POS.

Compare receipts, tax, discounts, inventory location, and customer history. Fix any difference that changes the advertised promise.

Consistency comes from one promise and two tested workflows

Online and POS checkouts do not need to perform the promotion in the same way. They do need to deliver the same deal. Define the campaign once, configure each channel deliberately, train retail staff, and test cross-channel returns and limits.

AutoCart can manage the online cart rule without theme code. Pair it with a concise POS procedure so customers receive the promotion you advertised at every participating location.
