A gift-with-purchase promotion has one job: give every qualifying customer the same free item. That assumption quietly breaks the moment a gift with purchase goes out of stock on Shopify mid-promotion — something almost none of the setup guides for gift with purchase (GWP) on Shopify mention, because they're written assuming the gift is infinite. It isn't. It's a real SKU sitting in a real warehouse, and a popular promotion can burn through 200 units of a "free sample" faster than it burns through 200 units of anything you're actually charging for.
What happens next depends entirely on two settings buried in that product's Inventory tab, plus whether you've planned an exit before you needed one. Get them wrong and you'll either oversell a physical product you now have to source, apologize for, or eat the cost of shipping late — or the promotion will quietly stop working with no warning, and customers who cleared your threshold won't get what the page promised. This guide covers what actually happens at zero stock, how that interacts with a rule-based auto-add app like AutoCart, and how to pause the offer cleanly before either failure mode happens to you.
What happens when a gift with purchase is out of stock on Shopify
Shopify decides what happens at zero inventory using two settings on each product variant, and they only matter together:
- Track quantity. This is the toggle that tells Shopify to count stock for that variant at all. If it's off, Shopify doesn't track a number for that SKU — it treats the item as always available, with no concept of "zero" to run out at.
- Continue selling when out of stock. This only applies once quantity tracking is on. With it unchecked, Shopify stops selling the variant the instant its tracked quantity hits zero — the storefront shows "Sold out," the add-to-cart button is disabled, and Shopify's cart API itself rejects a request to add more of that variant than is actually in stock. With it checked, Shopify keeps selling past zero: inventory goes negative, there's no "Sold out" state, and the item adds to cart exactly as if the warehouse were full.
That second setting is the entire fork in the road for a free gift. Continue selling off protects you from overselling, at the cost of the gift silently becoming unavailable once stock runs out. Continue selling on keeps the gift available indefinitely, at the cost of shipping more of it than you actually have — the "Don't oversell" and "don't quietly fail" outcomes are mutually exclusive, and Shopify's default won't pick the right one for a promotional item on your behalf.
How AutoCart's auto-add interacts with a zero-stock gift
AutoCart adds the gift to the cart through the same underlying cart mechanism a manual "Add to cart" click uses, so the gift SKU's inventory policy applies to a rule-triggered add exactly the same way it applies to a customer clicking the button themselves. That has two direct consequences:
- If continue selling is off and the gift is at zero stock, the add is subject to Shopify's own out-of-stock enforcement at the platform level — the same deny-inventory-policy behavior that blocks a manual add-to-cart call once a variant's tracked quantity runs out. A customer can still fully qualify for the promotion (cart value, product, or tag condition all met) while the actual gift-add fails, because the eligibility check and the inventory check are two separate things. Exactly how that failure surfaces on your storefront — a quiet no-op versus a visible error — is worth testing directly in a sandbox cart before you rely on it, since it's platform-level inventory enforcement rather than app-specific logic.
- If continue selling is on, there's nothing stopping the rule from continuing to add the gift at zero, or negative, stock. AutoCart's rule keeps evaluating the same condition it always has — cart value, product, tag, whatever you set — and has no separate "is the linked gift product still in stock" condition to check against. The rule doesn't know or care that the gift ran out; it only knows the customer qualified.
Worth being precise about what AutoCart's existing automatic-removal feature does and doesn't cover here: it removes the auto-added gift when the cart stops qualifying — the customer drops below the threshold, or removes the item that triggered the rule. It has no logic tied to the gift product's own inventory count. A cart that still qualifies will still trigger the rule regardless of what's left in the warehouse. Stock depletion is a merchant decision to catch and act on, not something either Shopify's cart or AutoCart's rule engine resolves for you automatically.
Set this up correctly before you launch
- Turn on Track quantity for the gift product, even though it's a $0 line item. It's easy to skip this step on a "free" SKU, especially one duplicated quickly for a promotion — but without it, Shopify has no concept of running out, and neither the "Sold out" state nor Shopify's own oversell protection ever engages, no matter what continue-selling says.
- Decide continue selling on purpose, not by default. Ask whether you're willing to backorder the physical gift and fulfill it late if demand outpaces stock. If yes, turn continue selling on and plan for fulfillment delay. If no, leave it off and treat the zero-stock case in step 4 as something you'll actively manage, not something the platform prevents for you.
- Set a real stock buffer, and turn on a low-stock alert. Load in meaningfully more units than you expect to give away during the promotion's run, and use Shopify's inventory notification settings to flag when the gift SKU crosses a threshold you choose — a warning while stock is still available is far more useful than finding out at zero.
- Have a pause plan ready before stock gets close to zero, not after. That's the difference between a promotion that ends on your terms and one that fails mid-run — covered next.
Pausing a gift-with-purchase rule cleanly instead of letting it fail
AutoCart's rule management gives you two ways to stop a rule from firing without deleting it or touching the gift product's inventory settings at all:
- Enable / disable. Flip the rule off the moment your stock buffer hits the threshold you set in step 3 above. This is the right tool when you don't know in advance exactly which day stock will run out — you're reacting to a live number, not a calendar date.
- Start and end dates. If you can reasonably estimate how long your stock will last at expected promotion volume, schedule the rule's end date for a date safely before you expect to hit zero. This is the right tool for a promotion you already know is date-bound (a launch week, a holiday push) where you'd rather build the safety margin into the schedule than watch inventory manually.
Either option stops the rule cleanly — no customer reaches checkout mid-transaction with a gift that fails to add, and no rule keeps firing against zero or negative stock because nobody was watching. Compare that to the alternative: leaving the rule live and letting the inventory setting decide the outcome for you, which either oversells the gift or produces a run of qualifying carts that quietly don't get what they were promised.
| Continue selling on, rule left running | Continue selling off, rule left running | Rule paused (enable/disable or end date) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Risk of overselling the gift | High — no cutoff | None | None |
| Risk of a qualifying customer not getting the gift | None | High once stock hits zero | None — promotion ends before the gap opens |
| Requires monitoring stock | Yes, to know when to intervene | Yes, to know when to intervene | No, if paused with margin ahead of zero |
| Who controls the outcome | Nobody — inventory count decides | Nobody — inventory count decides | You, on a schedule or trigger you set |
Common mistakes with gift-with-purchase inventory
- Never turning on inventory tracking for the gift SKU because it's "just a free item." Without tracking, there's no countdown to watch and no Shopify oversell protection either, regardless of the continue-selling setting.
- Assuming something automatically pauses the promotion at zero stock. Neither Shopify nor AutoCart has a "pause when the linked product runs out" feature today — that decision point exists only if you build it into your monitoring and rule management.
- Leaving continue selling on without deciding you're actually fine backordering a giveaway item. A free gift going negative in inventory is still a real cost — it just arrives as an unplanned reorder or a delayed-fulfillment apology instead of a clean stockout.
- Leaving continue selling off with no low-stock alert set. The rule will keep working right up until the exact moment it silently doesn't — with no warning in between if you're not watching the number yourself.
- Building the promotion with no fallback SKU or planned end point, so a stockout becomes an emergency instead of a scheduled wind-down you already had a plan for.
Gift-with-purchase inventory on Shopify: frequently asked questions
What happens if my Shopify gift-with-purchase item sells out mid-promotion? It depends on the gift variant's "Continue selling when out of stock" setting. With it off, Shopify stops allowing that item to be added to any cart once tracked stock hits zero, including a rule-triggered add — qualifying customers won't receive it until stock is replenished. With it on, the item keeps getting added past zero stock, with inventory going negative and no automatic cutoff.
Does "Continue selling when out of stock" affect a free gift the same way as a regular product? Yes. Shopify applies inventory policy at the variant level regardless of price, so a $0 gift SKU is governed by exactly the same tracking and continue-selling settings as a full-price product.
Will AutoCart automatically pause a gift-with-purchase rule when the gift runs out of stock? No. AutoCart's automatic removal is tied to cart eligibility — a customer dropping below the threshold or removing the qualifying item — not to the gift product's own inventory level. Pausing a rule because a gift is running low is a manual step, done through the rule's enable/disable toggle or a scheduled end date.
Should I turn on inventory tracking for a $0 gift product? Yes. Tracking is what gives you a visible countdown and lets Shopify's own out-of-stock protections engage at all. Skipping it because the item is free removes your only warning signal before a stockout.
What's the cleanest way to end a gift-with-purchase promotion before the gift runs out? Set a stock buffer and a low-stock alert, then disable the rule (or schedule an end date, if you know the promotion's timeline in advance) once stock crosses that buffer — before it reaches zero, not after.
Plan the exit before you launch the promotion
A gift-with-purchase rule is easy to set up and easy to forget about — until the gift itself runs out and the platform's default behavior, not your intent, decides what happens next. Turn on inventory tracking for the gift SKU, make a deliberate call on continue selling, and set a stock buffer with an alert so you have room to pause the rule on your own schedule instead of finding out at checkout.
