The best free gift is not simply the cheapest product in your warehouse. To learn how to choose a free gift for Shopify, score each candidate on margin, relevance, perceived value, shipping impact, inventory depth, repeat-purchase potential, and return risk.

That approach prevents two common failures: a gift customers do not care about and a gift that looks successful until fulfillment and returns erase the margin.

Use the scorecard below to compare candidates before you build the campaign.

Start with the job the gift needs to do

A gift can serve several purposes, but one should lead.

  • Increase average order value: give shoppers a reason to cross a cart threshold.
  • Introduce another product: use a sample that can lead to a future full-size purchase.
  • Move inventory: pair a slow product with a strong seller without discounting the hero product.
  • Reward a segment: create a VIP, first-purchase, or repeat-customer benefit.
  • Support a launch: connect the gift to a new collection or seasonal story.

A candidate that works for sampling may not work for AOV. A trial sachet can be an excellent introduction but too weak to move a cart from $70 to $100. Define the job before scoring the product.

Use this seven-factor free-gift scorecard

Score each factor from one to five. A score of five is best.

Factor 1 point 3 points 5 points
Landed cost Threatens campaign margin Affordable with limits Low cost relative to threshold
Relevance Unrelated to purchase Fits the category Naturally completes the purchase
Perceived value Feels like clearance Useful but ordinary Feels meaningfully generous
Shipping impact Adds parcel or surcharge Adds some weight Fits existing packaging
Inventory depth Uncertain or scarce Enough for forecast Deep, reliable supply
Repeat-purchase potential One-off use Some future interest Strong path to full-size/replenishment
Return/abuse risk Easy to resell or exploit Manageable Low incentive for promotion abuse

Add the seven scores for a total out of 35. Treat 28 or more as a strong candidate, 22–27 as testable with safeguards, and below 22 as a signal to choose another product or redesign the offer.

The total is a decision aid, not a substitute for a margin model. A product that scores five on everything except cost can still make the campaign unprofitable.

Calculate the true cost of the gift

Use landed and incremental costs, not retail price.

Gift campaign cost per redeemed order = product landed cost + extra pick/pack cost + incremental packaging + incremental shipping + expected return cost

Suppose a cosmetic pouch has:

  • $3.20 landed cost
  • $0.60 extra handling
  • $0.30 packaging impact
  • $0.90 average shipping impact
  • $0.40 expected return and support cost

The operational cost is $5.40 per redeemed order. At a $75 threshold, that is 7.2% of qualifying revenue before the cost of the paid products, payment fees, and other discounts.

Now compare that with the incremental gross profit created by customers who increase their carts to qualify. The campaign should be funded by changed behavior, not by orders that would already have exceeded the threshold.

For a complete model, use the Shopify gift-with-purchase margin guide.

Choose relevance over random value

A relevant gift makes the main purchase more useful.

  • Coffee beans + reusable scoop
  • Skin-care set + travel pouch
  • Running shoes + performance socks
  • Candle + wick trimmer
  • Pet food + sample treats

An unrelated clearance product may have a higher retail price and still feel cheaper. Customers compare the gift with what they intended to buy, not with the price printed on its product page.

Relevance also improves merchandising. The campaign message becomes specific—“Get a free wick trimmer with any two candles”—instead of a generic “Free gift over $60.”

Check shipping before choosing a physical gift

A $2 product can create a $7 shipping problem.

Ask:

  • Does it fit the parcel already used by most qualifying orders?
  • Does it add dimensional weight?
  • Is it fragile, liquid, hazardous, or temperature-sensitive?
  • Can it ship to every market where the promotion appears?
  • Will it split fulfillment across locations?

Test the gift in real packages, not only in a spreadsheet. The warehouse may find that the product needs a box instead of a mailer, extra padding, or manual handling. Use the Shopify free-gift shipping and fulfillment checklist to test locations, rates, and split shipments.

Match inventory depth to the campaign forecast

Estimate redemptions before launch:

Expected gifts = eligible orders × expected qualification rate × redemption rate

Then add a safety buffer for demand spikes, replacements, and inventory inaccuracies. If the forecast is 800 gifts and you have 820 units, the campaign has almost no tolerance for error.

Track the gift variant's inventory in Shopify even when shoppers cannot buy it at full price.

Choose one of three out-of-stock plans in advance:

  1. End the offer when inventory reaches the reserve.
  2. Replace the gift with a pre-approved backup.
  3. Let the customer choose from available gifts.

Do not silently substitute a lower-value product. Update the promotion everywhere the original gift appears.

Use samples when the second purchase matters

Product samples work best when they create an obvious next step. The gift should be large enough to evaluate, connected to the purchased product, and easy to buy later.

Track whether recipients return for the full-size product, not only whether the initial campaign increased AOV. A sample that converts future orders can justify a higher acquisition cost than a novelty gift.

The Shopify product-sampling strategy guide explains how to measure that path.

Apply hard vetoes before comparing totals

Some risks should disqualify a gift even if its score is high:

  • It cannot be sold or shipped in a target market.
  • Inventory is already committed to full-price demand.
  • The product requires a separate shipment for common orders.
  • Its use creates a safety or compliance concern for unknown recipients.
  • The gift conflicts with the customer's likely size, shade, allergy, or preference.
  • The terms would be difficult for support staff to enforce fairly.

For preference-sensitive products, a customer-choice gift can outperform a single auto-added option. Keep the choice set small enough to avoid decision friction and inventory fragmentation.

Turn the winning gift into an AutoCart rule

Once you select the product, match the rule to the campaign job.

  1. Choose a cart-value, product, collection, quantity, or customer-tag condition.
  2. Exclude the gift product from its own qualification logic.
  3. Set the gift quantity and whether the customer can remove it.
  4. Decide what happens when the cart falls below the threshold.
  5. Set start and end dates for a limited campaign.
  6. Place higher-priority rules above broader promotions.
  7. Test qualification, removal, discount combinations, inventory, and mobile cart behavior.

For an AOV campaign, compare your proposed threshold with the store's current order-value distribution. A threshold far above normal behavior will produce few redemptions; one below the current average may give away margin without changing carts.

Make the decision with evidence

Score at least three candidates, calculate the true redeemed-order cost, and document why the winner supports the campaign objective. Then run a limited test and compare:

  • Qualification rate
  • Incremental AOV
  • Gift cost per qualifying order
  • Conversion rate
  • Return rate
  • Full-size follow-on purchases, when relevant
  • Support contacts and fulfillment exceptions

The best gift is the one that changes profitable customer behavior without creating avoidable operational work. Relevance earns attention; margin and fulfillment determine whether the campaign deserves to continue.

AutoCart lets you turn the winning product into a cart rule with product, collection, value, quantity, or customer-tag conditions—without custom theme code.
