A free gift can change Shopify shipping rates even when its price is $0. Once the gift is added to the cart as a product, Shopify can use its weight, shipping profile, inventory location, and fulfillment assignment when calculating the order.

That can produce surprises after a gift-with-purchase campaign launches: a higher carrier rate, a combined rate from two shipping profiles, a second fulfillment, or a gift line on the packing slip that warehouse staff were not expecting. The promotion may be working exactly as configured. The operational setup behind the gift is what needs attention.

This guide explains what Shopify merchants should check before adding a physical gift to customer orders.

The short answer: a $0 gift is still a physical product

Setting a gift's selling price to $0 changes what the customer pays for the product. It does not remove the product from the order.

When a free gift is added as a product variant, Shopify still has to answer the same questions it would for a paid product:

  • How much does the product weigh?
  • Which shipping profile contains it?
  • Which location has inventory?
  • Can the same location fulfill the gift and the purchased products?
  • Which line items belong in each shipment?

Shopify's shipping documentation confirms that weight-based rates use product weight, while carrier-calculated rates can use shipment weight, dimensions, origin, destination, value, and delivery speed. Shipping profiles can also apply different rules to specific products and fulfillment locations. That is why a gift can affect delivery charges even though it adds nothing to the merchandise subtotal.

When a free gift changes Shopify shipping rates

The outcome depends on how your store calculates shipping. A gift will not affect every setup in the same way.

Shipping setup What the gift can change
Flat rate with no conditions Usually nothing, as long as the gift stays in the same applicable profile and location setup
Price-based rate A $0 gift usually does not increase the cart value used for the threshold
Weight-based rate The gift's recorded weight can move the shipment into a higher rate band
Carrier-calculated rate Weight, package dimensions, origin, and other shipment details can change the returned rate
Multiple shipping profiles Shopify can combine rates from the purchased product's profile and the gift's profile
Multiple fulfillment locations Shopify may calculate or combine rates based on where the products can be fulfilled

The gift's weight can push the order into a higher band

Suppose your weight-based rates charge $7 up to 2 kg and $11 above 2 kg. A customer's paid products weigh 1.9 kg. Adding a 200 g sample takes the order to 2.1 kg, so the higher rate can apply.

An incorrect product weight causes the opposite problem. If the gift is set to 0 g even though it is a physical product, checkout may undercharge for shipping and the purchased label may cost more than the customer paid. Shopify recommends entering accurate weights for products used with weight-based or carrier-calculated rates.

A separate shipping profile can create a combined rate

Every product uses either Shopify's general shipping profile or a custom profile. When products from different profiles appear in one cart, Shopify may combine the applicable rates and show one total at checkout.

For example, your regular products might use a $5 standard rate while the gift sits in a custom profile with a $3 rate. Shopify's documented combined-rate behavior can produce an $8 shipping charge. Moving the gift into the intended profile, or aligning rates across profiles, prevents the promotion from accidentally adding a second shipping charge.

A different location can affect the shipping origin

Inventory location matters too. If the purchased products are available in one warehouse but the gift is stocked only in another, Shopify may need to split the fulfillment. Carrier-calculated and weight-based setups can return a different rate because the order now has another origin or shipment.

Shopify tries to minimize split fulfillments by default, then considers the destination market and proximity. The exact assignment still depends on available inventory and your order-routing rules. Stocking campaign gifts at the same locations as the qualifying products gives Shopify a better chance of keeping the order together.

Will a free gift appear on the Shopify packing slip?

Yes, if the gift is a line item in the shipment. Shopify packing slips list the products included in a package, along with details such as SKU, quantity, and weight. For an order with multiple shipments, Shopify can generate a separate packing slip for each shipment.

That behavior is useful. The gift line tells the picker to put the sample, accessory, or promotional product in the box. Without it, a warehouse team may have no operational instruction to include the gift.

Before launch, check the printed result rather than assuming the $0 price makes the line self-explanatory:

  • Give the gift a recognizable product title and SKU.
  • Confirm the quantity is correct on the slip.
  • Make sure warehouse staff know the line is intentional.
  • If you use a customized packing-slip template, verify that it does not hide zero-priced products or promotional line items.
  • For split orders, confirm the gift appears on the slip for the location that will actually pack it.

Shopify lets merchants customize packing slips with Liquid. Treat template changes carefully: removing the gift from the document may make the customer-facing slip cleaner, but it can also remove the picker's clearest instruction. If your warehouse uses the packing slip as a pick list, keep the gift visible or replace it with another reliable warehouse instruction.

How free gifts affect fulfillment and inventory

A physical gift needs inventory, an assigned location, and a fulfillment step. Free does not mean inventory-free.

Shopify allocates the gift like another line item

When Shopify assigns an online order, it considers available inventory and your order-routing configuration. If one location can fulfill the whole order, Shopify can assign it there. If no location has every product, Shopify may split the order across locations or oversell from a priority location, depending on your settings.

This creates three campaign risks:

  • Split fulfillments: the paid products ship from one location and the gift from another.
  • Delayed orders: staff hold the main order while waiting for gift stock.
  • Overselling: the promotion keeps qualifying while the chosen location has no gift inventory available.

Track the gift as a normal stocked product unless you have a specific fulfillment workflow that does not require Shopify inventory tracking. If several locations fulfill online orders, distribute gift stock where the qualifying products are most likely to ship.

Your 3PL or fulfillment app must receive the gift line

If a third-party logistics provider, dropshipper, or fulfillment app handles orders, run a test order before the campaign starts. Confirm that the integration imports the gift variant, recognizes its SKU, and routes it to a location that holds stock.

Pay particular attention to rules that filter products by price, vendor, product type, or SKU. A workflow that ignores $0 lines can leave the gift unfulfilled even though Shopify shows it correctly on the order.

Partial fulfillment changes what the customer receives

If the gift and paid products are assigned to separate shipments, each shipment has its own fulfillment state and packing slip. A customer could receive the purchased product first and the gift later, which adds cost and makes the promotion feel like a mistake.

When a split is unavoidable, decide whether the gift is worth shipping separately. For low-cost samples, it may be better to restrict the promotion to regions or products that the same location can fulfill. That decision belongs in the campaign's margin calculation, alongside product cost and pick-and-pack labor. Our gift-with-purchase margin guide covers those costs in more detail.

Pre-launch checklist for a physical Shopify gift

Run this check with the exact gift variant and a realistic customer address:

  1. Verify the product record. Confirm the title, SKU, physical-product setting, and accurate packaged product weight.
  2. Check the shipping profile. Make sure the gift sits in the general or custom profile you intend to use.
  3. Review profile rates. Look for a separate flat rate or carrier setup that Shopify could combine with the rest of the cart.
  4. Check inventory by location. Stock enough units at the locations that fulfill qualifying orders.
  5. Review order routing. Confirm Shopify can assign the paid products and gift to one location when practical.
  6. Place test orders below and above the promotion threshold. Compare the available shipping services and prices.
  7. Print the packing slip. Check that the gift title, SKU, quantity, and shipment assignment are clear.
  8. Send the test order through your fulfillment integration. Confirm the warehouse or 3PL receives and picks the gift line.
  9. Remove a qualifying product from the test cart. If AutoCart powers the offer, confirm automatic removal takes the gift out when the cart no longer qualifies.

If the campaign also promises free shipping, test both mechanics together. Our guide to stacking free shipping with a gift-with-purchase rule explains how to keep the thresholds and cart messages from competing.

Troubleshooting: the gift made shipping more expensive

Compare a qualifying cart with and without the gift, using the same address. Then check these settings in order:

  1. Product weight: Did the gift cross a weight threshold or change a carrier-calculated shipment?
  2. Shipping profile: Is the gift in a custom profile with its own rate?
  3. Inventory location: Can the same location fulfill the gift and all paid products?
  4. Location group: Are Shopify's rates being combined across profiles or location groups?
  5. Package choice: Does the physical gift require a larger parcel than the products alone?

Do not solve an unexpected rate by entering a false weight. That may make checkout look right while pushing the cost difference into your shipping-label bill. Fix the shipping profile, location plan, package setup, or campaign eligibility instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does a free product count toward Shopify shipping weight?

Yes. If the free gift is a physical product with a recorded weight, Shopify can include that weight when determining weight-based or carrier-calculated shipping. Its $0 price does not make its weight zero.

Why did my free gift add a second shipping charge?

The gift may be in a different shipping profile or require fulfillment from another location. Shopify can combine rates when a cart contains products with separate applicable rates. Compare the gift's profile, location inventory, and rate names with the purchased products.

Can I hide a free gift from the packing slip?

Shopify packing slips can be customized with Liquid, so the template can control what appears. Hiding the line may also hide the warehouse instruction to pack the gift. Test the picking workflow before changing the template.

Does Shopify fulfill a free gift automatically?

Shopify treats the gift as an order line, but a warehouse, 3PL, fulfillment app, or merchant still has to fulfill it. Confirm the gift has inventory, a valid location assignment, and a SKU recognized by the fulfillment workflow.

How do I prevent a free gift from creating a split shipment?

Stock the gift at the same locations as the qualifying products, review order routing, and test common product combinations. If one location cannot fulfill the complete order, Shopify may split it across locations.

Make the promotion work beyond the cart

A gift-with-purchase campaign is not finished when the product appears in the cart. The gift also needs to produce the right shipping rate, reach the correct fulfillment location, print clearly for the picker, and arrive in the customer's package.

AutoCart can add the gift when a cart meets your rules and remove it when the cart stops qualifying. Your shipping profiles, product weights, inventory locations, and fulfillment process determine what happens next. Test the full order path before launch, especially when the gift is stocked separately or uses a custom shipping profile.
