AutoCart does not work with Shopify draft orders or the checkout links in draft-order invoices. A draft order is assembled in Shopify admin before the customer receives an invoice. Because that purchase does not pass through the regular storefront cart where AutoCart evaluates cart rules, AutoCart cannot add a free gift, discounted product, bundle item, or other offer to it automatically.
That does not mean you cannot honor the promotion. It means the promotional line items and discounts must be added to the draft order before you send the invoice. Here is how the different paths work and what to do in each one.
Storefront cart, regular checkout, and draft-order checkout are different paths
The word “checkout” makes these flows sound more similar than they are. For AutoCart, the important question is not whether the customer eventually sees a Shopify payment page. It is whether the order passed through an AutoCart-supported cart or checkout path where the rule could evaluate the customer’s selections.
| Purchase path | Who builds the order | Does AutoCart run? | What the merchant should do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online-store cart or cart drawer | Customer | Yes, for configured Store Automation rules | Let the rule add or remove the offer as the cart changes |
| Regular online-store checkout | Customer, after using the storefront cart | Depends on the configured rule type and store plan | Test the full customer journey before launch |
| Draft order in Shopify admin | Merchant or staff member | No | Add promotional products and discounts manually |
| Invoice or direct checkout link for a draft order | Merchant prepares the order; customer pays it | No | Finalize every promised line item before sending the link |
Shopify describes a draft-order invoice as a way to send a customer a secure checkout link for an order that the merchant has already created. The customer can enter payment and shipping details, but the invoice link does not rebuild that order through the normal storefront cart. The products, quantities, prices, and discounts come from the draft order you prepared.
Why AutoCart cannot add products to a draft-order invoice
AutoCart responds to supported storefront cart or checkout events. For example, a rule can watch a customer’s cart total, notice that it crossed $75, and add a gift. If the customer removes a qualifying product or drops below the threshold, AutoCart can remove the gift again.
A draft order starts somewhere else: Shopify admin. A staff member chooses the products, quantities, customer, shipping, and discounts. Sending the invoice then gives the customer a payment link for that prepared order. There is no regular storefront-cart update for AutoCart to evaluate, so its auto-add and auto-remove logic does not run.
This remains true even though Shopify calls the destination an invoice checkout. Reaching a checkout page does not make it the same purchase path as a customer building a cart on your online store.
What happens if you send the invoice without the promotional item
If a draft order qualifies for a free gift or discounted add-on but that product is not already in the draft, AutoCart will not insert it when the customer opens the invoice. The customer will see and pay for the order you prepared.
That can create avoidable support problems:
- A wholesale buyer expects the free sample discussed by email, but it is missing from the invoice.
- A customer crosses a promotional threshold, but the gift never appears because the order was created by staff.
- A sales representative promises a bundle price that was never applied to the draft.
- Staff assume the app will “catch up” when the buyer reaches payment, then discover the completed order is missing the offer.
Treat Send invoice as the final review point. If the customer was promised a product or price adjustment, put it in the draft before the link leaves your store.
How to include a free gift or discounted product in a draft order
For a draft-order sale, reproduce the intended offer manually in Shopify admin:
- Go to Orders → Drafts and open the draft order.
- Confirm the order qualifies under the same conditions as your promotion. Check the relevant subtotal, products, quantities, customer status, and campaign dates.
- Add the gift, bundle product, sample, or companion product as a line item.
- Apply the correct line-item or order discount in Shopify. Do not assume an AutoCart price or discount will transfer to the draft order.
- Check inventory, shipping, taxes, quantities, and the final amount due.
- Add an internal note or tag that identifies the promotion, so staff can audit the order later.
- Review the customer-facing invoice, then send it.
Shopify warns that if you add a product after sending an invoice, previously calculated shipping rates do not update automatically. That is another reason to finish the promotion and verify shipping before the first invoice goes out.
Safe alternatives when you want AutoCart to apply the rule
Choose the order path based on who needs to control the cart.
Send the customer through the online store
If the buyer can build and pay for the order themselves, direct them to the regular storefront. AutoCart can then evaluate the supported cart path as products and quantities change. This is usually the cleanest option for public gift-with-purchase, BOGO, and cart-threshold campaigns.
Test the exact theme, cart drawer, products, customer eligibility, and rule before sharing the promotion. Do not use a shortcut that skips the cart unless you have verified how the rule behaves on that route.
Keep using draft orders and add the offer manually
Draft orders are useful when staff need to negotiate pricing, prepare wholesale orders, take phone or email orders, or send an invoice. In those cases, keep the draft-order workflow and make promotional review part of the staff checklist.
A simple internal note can make the process repeatable: “If subtotal is at least $100 before shipping, add one Sample Kit and apply the campaign discount before sending.” This is manual work, but it is safer than relying on an app trigger that is not present in the flow.
Separate public and assisted-sales promotions
If you regularly use both storefront carts and draft orders, document which promotions apply to each channel. A storefront offer might be automated by AutoCart, while a wholesale or assisted-sales equivalent uses a manual line item and a different threshold.
This prevents staff from promising that every public cart rule will also appear on an invoice. It also gives you a clearer way to track the cost of each channel’s offer.
A pre-invoice checklist for draft orders
Before sending a draft-order invoice, confirm:
- Every promised product is already a line item.
- Free gifts or samples use the intended quantity and price.
- Discounts have been applied directly to the draft order.
- The order still meets the promotion’s eligibility rules.
- Inventory is available or reserved where appropriate.
- Shipping has been recalculated after the final products were added.
- The invoice message explains any free or discounted product clearly.
- An internal note or tag identifies the campaign for reporting and support.
The checklist is short by design. Its job is to replace an automatic storefront rule with a reliable staff review when the purchase starts in Shopify admin.
AutoCart and Shopify draft orders: frequently asked questions
Does AutoCart work with Shopify draft orders?
No. AutoCart does not evaluate or change orders created as drafts in Shopify admin. Add any promotional products and discounts to the draft manually before sending an invoice or collecting payment.
Will AutoCart run when the customer clicks the invoice checkout link?
No. A draft-order invoice links to payment for an order the merchant already prepared. It does not send the customer through the regular storefront cart where AutoCart’s cart rules run.
Can AutoCart auto-add a free gift to a draft order?
No. If a draft order qualifies for a free gift, add the gift as a line item and apply the intended discount directly in Shopify admin before sending the invoice.
Can I add the gift after sending the invoice?
You can edit a draft order, but review the result carefully and resend updated information as needed. Shopify notes that shipping rates calculated before a product is added do not automatically update, so the safer process is to finish all line items before the first invoice.
Does this limitation affect normal storefront orders?
No. It is specific to draft orders and their invoice checkout links. AutoCart is designed for supported storefront cart and checkout paths. If you are deciding where a rule should run, read our guide to Store Automation vs. Checkout Automation.
Choose the order path before you promise the promotion
AutoCart can automate offers when a customer moves through a supported online-store path. A Shopify draft order is an assisted-sales path built by staff, so its products and discounts need to be finalized by staff as well.
For regular storefront promotions, learn how AutoCart works with Shopify cart rules. For invoice, wholesale, phone, or email orders, use the pre-invoice checklist above and add every promised offer directly to the draft.
