Set up a rule in a cart automation app and you'll usually hit a choice you didn't expect: does this rule run on the cart page, the checkout page, or both? The names vary by app, but on AutoCart they're called Store Automation, Checkout Automation, and Global Automation — and picking the wrong one is the most common reason a rule "works" in testing but doesn't show up where a merchant expects it in production.
The confusion is understandable. All three do the same core thing — add or adjust a product automatically based on a condition — but they run at different points in the buying journey, and one of them requires Shopify Plus. Here's exactly what each one does, where it runs, and how to decide which rule type fits your offer.
What is store automation on Shopify?
Store Automation is the baseline automation type: it runs on the cart page. When a customer's cart meets a rule's condition — a spending threshold, a specific product added, a quantity reached — AutoCart adds (or adjusts) a product directly in their cart while they're still shopping, before they've moved to checkout.
Store Automation is available on every Shopify plan, not just Plus. That makes it the default choice for most merchants, and it covers the majority of common promotions:
- A free gift added when the cart hits $75
- A companion product bundled in when a specific item is added
- A discounted add-on that appears once quantity crosses a threshold
Because it runs on the cart page, the customer sees the change immediately — in the cart drawer or cart page — with time to notice it, and remove it if your rule allows that, before they ever reach checkout.
What is checkout automation on Shopify?
Checkout Automation runs one step later, on the checkout page itself — and it's built on Shopify's checkout extensibility framework, which means it's exclusive to Shopify Plus stores. Standard and Advanced plans can't use it, because the underlying checkout UI extension framework isn't available on those plans.
Where Store Automation reacts to what's in the cart, Checkout Automation reacts to what's happening at the final purchase step — which opens up conditions Store Automation can't see:
- Triggering an offer based on the payment method or shipping option the customer selects at checkout
- Auto-applying a discount code the moment checkout loads, without the customer typing anything
- Adding or adjusting a gift based on information only available at checkout, after the cart has already been finalized
If your offer logic depends on something the customer decides at checkout rather than before it, Checkout Automation is the only rule type that can act on it — and it requires Plus.
What is global automation (and how do the two interact)?
This is the part that actually answers "how do these work together": Global Automation is a single rule that runs across both the cart page and the checkout page at once, instead of needing two separate rules to cover the same offer in two places. Like Checkout Automation, it's a Shopify Plus feature.
Without Global Automation, keeping a promotion consistent from cart to checkout on Plus means building a Store Automation rule and a matching Checkout Automation rule and keeping their conditions in sync by hand — which is exactly where offers drift out of sync (a gift shows in the cart but disappears at checkout, or vice versa). Global Automation removes that duplication: one rule, one condition, enforced on both pages.
That makes it the right choice whenever you want a gift-with-purchase or bundle offer to look and behave identically whether the customer is still browsing their cart or has already moved to the final step.
Store, checkout, and global automation compared
| Store Automation | Checkout Automation | Global Automation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Runs on | Cart page | Checkout page | Cart page + checkout page |
| Plan required | Any Shopify plan | Shopify Plus | Shopify Plus |
| Rules needed for full-journey coverage | 1 (cart only) | 1 (checkout only) | 1 (covers both) |
| Can react to checkout-only info (payment method, etc.) | No | Yes | Yes |
| Visible to customer before checkout | Yes | No | Yes (from the cart step onward) |
| Best for | Most GWP, bundle, and AOV offers on any plan | Checkout-specific triggers and auto-applied codes | Consistent offers across the full journey on Plus |
Which automation type should you use?
Work through it in this order:
- Not on Shopify Plus? Store Automation is your only option — but it also covers the vast majority of standard promotions (free gifts by cart value, bundles, quantity-based offers), so this isn't much of a limitation in practice.
- On Shopify Plus, and the offer only needs to matter in the cart? Use Store Automation. There's no reason to add a checkout-page rule for something the customer already saw and accepted in the cart.
- On Shopify Plus, and the trigger depends on something that only happens at checkout (payment method, an auto-applied code, a checkout-only condition)? Use Checkout Automation.
- On Shopify Plus, and you want one offer to hold consistently from cart through checkout? Use Global Automation instead of building matching Store and Checkout rules separately.
Common mistakes with store vs. checkout automation
- Building a Checkout Automation rule without Shopify Plus. This is the single most common support question — the rule type simply isn't available below Plus, and no amount of configuration will make it fire. Confirm your plan first.
- Building two separate rules (Store + Checkout) for one offer, instead of one Global rule. This works until the two rules' conditions quietly drift apart — a discount changes on one but not the other, and the offer looks inconsistent to the customer. If Global Automation is available to you, use it for anything that should match on both pages.
- Assuming a Store Automation rule will also apply at checkout. It won't — it only runs on the cart page. If a gift needs to persist visibly all the way to the final purchase step, that's a Global (or paired) automation, not a Store-only rule.
- Not testing the actual checkout preview after publishing a Checkout or Global rule. Checkout extensibility changes render differently than cart-page changes; always click through a live checkout before calling a rule done.
Store automation vs. checkout automation: frequently asked questions
Do I need Shopify Plus to use checkout automation? Yes. Checkout Automation runs on Shopify's checkout extensibility framework, which is only available on Shopify Plus. Store Automation, by contrast, works on every Shopify plan.
What's the difference between checkout automation and global automation? Checkout Automation runs only on the checkout page. Global Automation runs the same rule on both the cart page and the checkout page at once, so you don't need to build and maintain two separate rules to keep an offer consistent across the whole journey. Both require Shopify Plus.
Can I run store automation without Shopify Plus? Yes — Store Automation is available on every Shopify plan and covers most common promotions: cart-value gifts, product-triggered bundles, and quantity-based offers.
What happens if I set up both a store rule and a checkout rule for the same offer? They run independently, which means their conditions can drift out of sync over time. If you're on Shopify Plus and want one offer to behave identically in the cart and at checkout, use a single Global Automation rule instead of maintaining two.
Does checkout automation slow down checkout? No — checkout extensibility is designed by Shopify to run within the checkout without adding meaningful load time, the same framework used for other native checkout customizations.
Pick the automation type that matches where your offer needs to live
Most promotions only need Store Automation — it's available on every plan and covers cart-value gifts, bundles, and quantity triggers without any extra setup. Checkout Automation earns its keep when your trigger depends on something that only happens at the final step, and Global Automation is the fix for keeping one offer consistent across the whole journey without maintaining duplicate rules.
AutoCart supports all three rule types from the same dashboard, so you're not locked into cart-only or checkout-only automation — you pick the scope that matches the offer, not the other way around.
