Average order value is the highest-leverage number most Shopify merchants ignore. You can spend more on ads to get more traffic, or you can get more revenue from the traffic you already have — and the second path doesn't cost you a cent in acquisition. A one-dollar lift in AOV drops almost entirely to your bottom line, because you've already paid to acquire the customer.
So how do you increase AOV on Shopify without discounting yourself into the ground? This guide covers seven tactics that work, roughly ordered from easiest to set up to most involved. Most of them share a mechanic: give the customer a concrete reason to add one more thing to the cart before checkout.
First, a benchmark to aim at.
What is a good average order value on Shopify?
Average order value is simply total revenue divided by number of orders over a period. Across Shopify stores, the average AOV sits around $85, according to Littledata's benchmark of roughly 2,800 stores/all-companies). The top 20% of stores clear $120 or more; the bottom 20% sit under $50.
But the number that matters is your own baseline, because AOV varies enormously by niche — food and beverage stores run low ($40–55), while electronics, furniture, and jewelry run several times higher. Pull your current AOV from Analytics → Reports → Average order value in Shopify admin, then treat every tactic below as a test against that baseline.
1. Set a free shipping threshold just above your AOV
This is the single most reliable AOV lever, and it costs nothing to try. Set free shipping to unlock at a cart value slightly above your current average, and a meaningful share of customers will add items to reach it. Studies consistently find that 58% of shoppers add extra items specifically to hit a free shipping threshold, and free shipping offers are associated with AOV lifts in the range of 15–30%.
The trick is where you set the bar. Too low and you give away shipping on orders that would have happened anyway; too high and shoppers abandon instead of adding. A common rule of thumb is to set the threshold 20–30% above your current AOV — high enough to stretch the basket, low enough to feel achievable.
To make it work, show a progress message in the cart ("You're $12 away from free shipping"). The nudge is what converts intent into a bigger order.
2. Add a gift with purchase above a spending threshold
A gift with purchase (GWP) works on the same psychology as a free shipping threshold — "spend $X, unlock something" — but with a free product instead of free freight. It's especially effective for stores where shipping is already cheap or free by default, so the shipping lever isn't available.
The catch on Shopify is that the platform can't add the gift to the cart on its own — its native discounts can make a product free, but the customer still has to find and add it manually. A rule-based app closes that gap by auto-adding the gift the moment the cart qualifies. We cover all three setup methods in detail in our guide to setting up gift with purchase on Shopify.
Set the threshold above your AOV for the same reason as free shipping — the offer should pull the basket up, not reward orders that were already going to clear.
3. Auto-add a companion product in the cart
Some products are almost always better together: a coffee grinder with beans, luggage with a travel pouch, a camera with a memory card. Instead of hoping the customer navigates back to the catalog to find the companion item, add it to the cart automatically when the primary product is present, with clear messaging about why it's there and an easy option to remove it.
This is a cart-level upsell rather than a product-page recommendation, which means it reaches the customer at the moment they're already committed to buying. AutoCart handles this with a rule: when product A is in the cart, auto-add companion product B (at full price or a small discount). It's a cleaner mechanic than a pop-up recommendation widget, and it doesn't touch your product pages. If you want the add-on priced at a percentage off rather than full price, see our guide on auto-adding a discounted product based on cart value — the same trigger-and-auto-add mechanic, tuned for margin instead of full-price cross-sell.
4. Build product bundles
Bundling packages complementary products into a single offer, usually at a slight discount versus buying each separately. It raises AOV by moving more units per transaction, and it does double duty by clearing slower SKUs when you pair them with a bestseller.
Bundles work best when the grouping is genuinely useful — a "starter kit," a "complete set," a "refill pack." A discount of 5–15% off the combined price is usually enough to make the bundle feel like the smart choice without eroding much margin. You can build bundles as their own products, or assemble them dynamically in the cart by auto-adding the companion items when the anchor product is present.
5. Run a BOGO or buy X get Y offer
Buy one get one (BOGO) and its variants — buy 2 get 1 free, buy X get Y at a discount — increase units per order by making the next unit the cheapest one. They're a strong fit for consumables and gifting seasons, where a customer buying one is often happy to grab a second.
As with GWP, Shopify's native Buy X Get Y discount has a gap: it discounts the free item but doesn't add it to the cart automatically, so redemption depends on the customer finding and adding it themselves. See our BOGO setup guide for how to run the offer so the free item actually shows up.
6. Offer volume or quantity discounts
For products people buy in multiples — supplements, pet food, candles, coffee — tiered quantity pricing pushes customers toward the larger pack. "Buy 3, save 10%" reframes the decision from "should I buy one?" to "how many should I buy?", which is a much better question for your AOV.
Volume discounts also reduce repeat-purchase friction: a customer who buys a three-month supply now is a customer you don't have to re-acquire next month. Just make sure the tiers are visible on the product page and reflected in the cart, so the customer sees the saving accrue as they add units.
7. Reward loyal and VIP customers with targeted perks
Your repeat customers already trust you, which makes them the easiest segment to move up in basket size. Tag your VIP or loyalty segment in Shopify, then show them offers that don't run for everyone — an exclusive free gift, an early-access bundle, or a members-only companion add.
Because the perk is tied to a customer tag, it fires only for the right people, so you're not giving margin away to first-time bargain hunters. This is where rule-based targeting earns its keep: AutoCart can auto-add a perk only for customers carrying a specific tag, without you building a separate checkout flow or loyalty platform.
How to choose which AOV tactic to start with
You don't need all seven at once. Pick based on what your store sells:
| If your store... | Start with |
|---|---|
| Charges for shipping | Free shipping threshold (#1) |
| Already offers free shipping | Gift with purchase (#2) |
| Sells naturally paired products | Companion auto-add (#3) or bundles (#4) |
| Sells consumables bought in multiples | Volume discounts (#6) or BOGO (#5) |
| Has a strong repeat-customer base | VIP perks (#7) |
Test one at a time against your AOV baseline so you can attribute the lift. Stacking three offers at once feels productive but makes it impossible to tell what actually worked — and can quietly stack discounts you didn't intend.
Increasing AOV on Shopify: frequently asked questions
What is average order value and how do I calculate it? AOV is total revenue divided by the number of orders over a given period. In Shopify, find it under Analytics → Reports → Average order value. It tells you how much the average customer spends per transaction — a number you can raise without buying more traffic.
What's the fastest way to increase AOV on Shopify? A free shipping threshold set just above your current AOV is usually the quickest win — it costs nothing to configure and taps a well-documented behavior: shoppers add items to avoid paying for shipping. Pair it with a cart message showing how far they are from qualifying.
Do I need an app to increase average order value? Not for every tactic — free shipping thresholds and native discounts are built into Shopify. But for offers that depend on automatically adding a product to the cart (gift with purchase, companion upsells, auto-add BOGO), you'll need a rule-based app, because Shopify can't add products to the cart on its own.
Does increasing AOV hurt conversion rate? It can if you set thresholds too high or bury customers in offers. Keep thresholds within ~20–30% of your current AOV and test one tactic at a time. Done right, AOV tactics lift revenue per visitor without measurably denting conversion.
Start with one lever and measure
The mistake most merchants make with AOV is treating it as a project instead of a series of small tests. Pick the one tactic that fits your store, set it live, and compare AOV over the next few weeks against your baseline. If it works, keep it and layer on the next one.
Several of these tactics — gift with purchase, companion upsells, auto-add BOGO, and VIP perks — share the same underlying need: getting the right product into the cart automatically, based on a rule you define. That's exactly what AutoCart does, without code or Shopify Plus. New to the app? Our step-by-step install guide walks through setup and your first rule in about 10 minutes.
