A customer adds one of your candles to their cart. Your buy one get one free promotion says the second one is on the house — but Shopify doesn't put it there. The customer either never realizes the offer applies, or has to go find the second candle and add it themselves. Either way, the deal you're paying for isn't landing the way you designed it.
Buy one get one free (BOGO) is one of the oldest promotions in retail because it works: it raises units per order and moves inventory without a blanket markdown. But running it on Shopify has a specific wrinkle. Shopify can discount the free item, but it won't add that item to the cart on its own — and that gap is where BOGO offers quietly lose redemptions.
This guide covers how BOGO works natively on Shopify, exactly where the native approach falls short, and how to close the gap so the free item actually appears in the cart.
How buy one get one free works on Shopify natively
Shopify supports BOGO through its built-in Buy X Get Y automatic discount. You define a "buy" condition (a quantity or specific product the customer purchases) and a "get" reward (another product, free or discounted). When the cart meets the buy condition, the discount applies to the get item.
To set up a basic BOGO with the native discount:
- In Shopify admin, go to Discounts and create a new discount.
- Choose Buy X, get Y as the discount type.
- Set Customer buys — for example, a minimum quantity of 1 from a specific product or collection.
- Set Customer gets — the reward product and quantity, with the value set to Free (100% off) or a percentage discount.
- Choose Automatic discount so no code is required, set any dates or usage limits, and save.
This is genuinely useful for one scenario: when the "buy" and "get" products are the same item and the customer is already adding multiples. Buy 2 candles, get the discount on the second — if both are in the cart, Shopify applies it.
Where the native BOGO discount falls short
The problem shows up the moment the free item is something the customer hasn't already added. As Shopify's own documentation notes and merchants repeatedly discover, the native Buy X Get Y discount does not add the "get" product to the cart automatically — the customer has to find that product and add it themselves before the discount can apply.
That single limitation undercuts most BOGO offers:
- No auto-add. If the free item is a different product, the customer has to navigate to it and add it manually. Most won't, because they don't know the offer exists.
- No storefront prompt. There's no built-in progress bar, cart message, or popup telling the customer they've qualified for a free item. The offer is invisible unless you market it separately.
- No automatic cleanup. If the customer changes their cart so it no longer qualifies, native discounts don't remove an orphaned free item.
For a "buy 2 of the same thing" deal where the customer is already stacking units, the native discount is fine. For anything where the free item needs to appear — a different product, a surprise gift, a companion item — you need the cart to add it automatically.
How to auto-add the free BOGO item (no code)
A rule-based app closes the gap by handling the add itself. Instead of relying on the customer to find the reward product, you set a rule and the app puts the free item in the cart the moment the buy condition is met. (If "set a rule" doesn't mean much to you yet, our beginner's guide to Shopify cart rules explains the condition-and-action logic behind it.)
Setup steps using AutoCart:
- Install AutoCart from the Shopify App Store and open the app dashboard.
- Create a new rule and set the trigger — for a classic BOGO, choose specific product in cart (or a collection, or a cart quantity threshold).
- Set the offer type to free gift (for buy one get one free) or discounted product (for buy one get one at X% off), and select which product gets added.
- Configure the cart message so the customer sees why the item is there — for example, "Your free second candle — added on us."
- Decide whether customers can remove the added item, and save the rule.
If your BOGO uses a code, first choose between a Shopify discount link and an automatic discount. Once live, the free item appears in the cart automatically when the customer qualifies — no code, no discount code to remember, no manual product hunt. And because the rule is condition-based, if the customer removes the qualifying product, AutoCart removes the free item too, so nobody reaches checkout with a giveaway they no longer earned.
Native BOGO vs. auto-add app: which should you use?
| Native Buy X Get Y | Rule-based app | |
|---|---|---|
| Discounts the free item | Yes | Yes |
| Auto-adds the free item to the cart | No — customer must add it | Yes |
| Works when the free item is a different product | Only if customer finds and adds it | Yes |
| Shows a cart message explaining the offer | No | Yes |
| Removes the free item if the cart no longer qualifies | No | Yes |
| Requires Shopify Plus | No | No |
| Requires a developer | No | No |
| Cost | Free | Low monthly fee |
If your BOGO is "buy 2 of the same product, one is discounted" and you're comfortable relying on customers to add both units, the native discount is free and does the job. If the free item is a separate product, or you want the offer to feel automatic and visible, an auto-add app is what makes the promotion actually redeem.
Common mistakes when running BOGO on Shopify
- Assuming the native discount adds the free item. It doesn't. This is the number-one reason BOGO offers underperform on Shopify — the discount is configured correctly, but the free product never reaches the cart. Test the full customer flow before you launch.
- Not messaging the offer in the cart. If a free item appears with no explanation, some customers assume it's an error and remove it. Always label why it's there.
- Running BOGO on your highest-margin bestseller. BOGO gives away a unit; run it on products where the second unit's margin can absorb it, or on slow inventory you want to move — not on the product already selling at full price.
- Forgetting an end date. A BOGO left running past its intended window keeps giving away units. Set an end date on the rule (or a calendar reminder if you're using native discounts).
- Not handling the removal case. If a customer removes the qualifying item, check what happens to the free one. With native discounts, an orphaned freebie can reach checkout; a rule-based app removes it automatically.
Shopify BOGO: frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have a built-in buy one get one free option? Yes — the Buy X Get Y automatic discount. It can make a second product free or discounted when the customer meets a buy condition. The limitation is that it discounts the free item but doesn't add it to the cart automatically; the customer has to add it themselves.
How do I add a free product to the cart automatically on Shopify? Use a rule-based app. Set a trigger (a specific product or quantity in the cart), choose the free product, and the app adds it automatically when the customer qualifies — no code and no Shopify Plus required.
What's the difference between BOGO and gift with purchase? BOGO ties the reward to buying a specific product or quantity ("buy one, get one"), while gift with purchase usually ties it to a spending threshold ("spend $75, get a free gift"). Both need the free item to be added to the cart to work well. See our gift with purchase setup guide for that variant.
Do I need Shopify Plus to run a BOGO offer? No. The native Buy X Get Y discount and rule-based auto-add apps both work on standard Shopify plans. You'd only need Shopify Plus if you built custom auto-add logic with Shopify Functions.
Make your BOGO offer actually redeem
A BOGO deal only works if the free item shows up. Shopify's native discount handles the pricing but leaves the hardest part — getting the product into the cart — to the customer, which is exactly where redemptions leak. For "buy 2 of the same thing" offers, that's a manageable gap. For anything where the free item needs to appear on its own, the auto-add is the whole game.
AutoCart handles the trigger, the free-item add, the cart messaging, and the automatic removal in one rule — set up in minutes, no code, no Shopify Plus. It's the same engine behind gift with purchase and companion upsells, applied to BOGO mechanics. If raising units per order is the goal, see the other AOV tactics worth testing alongside it.
