Installing a Shopify app is usually the easy part. Figuring out what to click next inside it is where merchants get stuck — and with AutoCart, that shows up as one specific support message: "I installed it and nothing happened." The install itself takes under two minutes. The two steps that actually make it work — turning on the theme block and creating your first rule — take a few minutes more, and they're the part this guide focuses on.

Here's the full path from the Shopify App Store to a live, working cart rule, start to finish in about 10 minutes.

What you need before you start

  • Shopify admin access (an owner or staff account with permission to install apps)
  • An Online Store 2.0 theme — AutoCart's cart block requires it; most themes released since 2021 qualify, and you can confirm yours under Online Store → Themes
  • No developer, no Shopify Plus, and no theme code edits required at any step

Step 1: install AutoCart from the Shopify App Store

  1. Go to the AutoCart listing on the Shopify App Store.
  2. Click Install. Shopify will show the permissions AutoCart requests — access to products, cart, and orders, so it can add and remove items and track which rules fired. Click Install app to confirm.
  3. You'll land on AutoCart's dashboard inside your Shopify admin. Nothing changes on your storefront yet — installing the app doesn't activate anything until you enable the theme block and create a rule.

Paid plans include a 7-day free trial, so you can build and test a rule before committing to one.

Step 2: enable the AutoCart block in your theme

This is the step most merchants skip, and it's the single most common reason a rule looks broken when it's actually working correctly — just invisible.

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes and click Customize on the theme you want to use.
  2. Open the Cart template, or the section that controls your cart drawer (the exact label depends on your theme).
  3. Click Add block or App embeds, depending on your theme's structure, and select AutoCart.
  4. Save.

This is what lets AutoCart show cart messaging — "You've unlocked a free gift," progress toward a spending threshold, and similar prompts. Without it, a rule can still add a product to the cart, but customers won't see why it's there.

Step 3: create your first cart rule

Rules are where AutoCart does its actual job. Every rule has the same three parts: a condition (what has to be true about the cart), an action (what gets added), and display settings (how the customer is told about it).

A low-risk rule to start with: add a free gift once the cart crosses a spending threshold.

  1. In the AutoCart dashboard, go to Rules → Create rule.
  2. Under Condition, choose Cart value threshold and set the dollar amount. A reasonable starting point is 20–30% above your current average order value.
  3. Under Action, choose Free gift, then select the product to auto-add and its quantity (usually one).
  4. Under Display, turn on cart messaging so customers see why the item appeared, and decide whether they're allowed to remove it manually.
  5. Set the rule to Active and save.

AutoCart checks the cart against your active rules on every update, so the gift adds itself the moment a customer crosses the threshold — and removes itself automatically if they take something out and drop back below it.

Step 4: test it before customers see it

  1. Open your storefront in an incognito or private window, so you're not testing against a cached cart.
  2. Add products until your cart crosses the threshold from Step 3.
  3. Confirm the gift appears automatically and the cart messaging shows.
  4. Remove an item to drop back below the threshold and confirm the gift is removed automatically.

If the gift doesn't show up, go back to Step 2 first — the missing theme block is the most common cause.

Common setup mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the theme block. Worth repeating once more: this is the top reason a correctly configured rule appears to do nothing.
  • Setting the threshold too close to your average order value. If it barely clears your AOV, you're giving away margin on orders that would have happened anyway. See our guide to increasing AOV on Shopify for how to set it properly.
  • Editing a draft theme and forgetting to publish it. A rule will work in theme preview but not for real customers until the theme with the AutoCart block enabled is the one that's live.
  • Turning on several rules at once. Start with one, confirm it works, and measure what it does to your numbers before adding the next. Rule priority ordering exists precisely because a tall, untested stack of conditions gets hard to debug later.

What to automate first, based on your goal

Goal Rule to start with
Raise average order value Cart value threshold → free gift or discounted add-on
Run a promotional offer Gift with purchase or BOGO rule
Reward repeat customers Customer tag condition → free perk for VIP-tagged customers
Move a specific product Specific-product-in-cart condition → auto-add a companion item

Installing AutoCart on Shopify: frequently asked questions

Does installing AutoCart require a developer or Shopify Plus? No. AutoCart installs from the Shopify App Store like any other app, runs on Online Store 2.0 themes without code edits, and doesn't require Shopify Plus.

Why isn't AutoCart showing up on my storefront after I installed it? Almost always the theme block. Installing the app only adds it to your admin — you still need to enable the AutoCart block under Online Store → Themes → Customize, and you need at least one active rule, before anything shows up on the storefront.

How long does setup actually take? Installing the app takes under two minutes. Enabling the theme block takes one more. Creating and testing your first rule takes the remaining five to seven minutes.

Can I test AutoCart before committing to a paid plan? Yes. Paid plans include a 7-day free trial, so you can install, configure a rule, and test it live on your storefront before being charged.

Do I need to edit theme code to set up AutoCart? No. The theme block is added through the theme editor's visual interface — no Liquid or code edits required at any step.

Start with one rule and build from there

The install itself is the fast part. The theme block and your first rule are what actually determine whether customers ever see AutoCart working. Start with one simple rule — a free gift at a spending threshold is the easiest place to begin — confirm it fires correctly, and add more once you can measure what the first one is doing to your average order value.
