To automatically add a free gift to the Shopify cart, you need a cart rule that watches for a qualifying condition, adds the gift product, and removes it if the cart stops qualifying. Shopify's native Buy X Get Y discount can make an eligible product free, but it does not put that product in the cart for the customer.
You do not need to edit your theme or hire a developer to close that gap. This guide shows how to set up a $75 free-gift offer with AutoCart, test the complete customer journey, and avoid the inventory and promotion mistakes that cause most gift campaigns to fail.
Why doesn't Shopify automatically add the free gift?
Shopify's native Buy X Get Y discount applies a discount after the customer has added both the qualifying product and the gift product. Shopify explicitly notes that customers must add all items manually; the "get" item is never automatically added.
That distinction is easy to miss:
- An automatic discount means the discount applies without a code.
- An auto-added gift means the product itself appears without the customer searching for or selecting it.
If your promotion says “Spend $75 and receive a free travel-size cleanser,” asking the shopper to find that cleanser undermines the offer. A no-code cart app handles the missing action: it monitors the cart and adds the correct product when the rule becomes true.

What you need before you create the free-gift rule
Prepare the offer before opening the app. A clear promotion is easier to configure and much easier to test.
- Choose one gift product and variant. Use a product with enough stock for the campaign. If the cleanser comes in several sizes or scents, decide whether every shopper gets the same variant or can choose.
- Choose the qualifying condition. This example uses a cart subtotal of $75. You can also trigger a gift from a specific product, collection, cart quantity, or customer tag.
- Define the threshold terms. State which merchandise qualifies and direct shoppers to the promotion terms. Our cart-total guide covers before- and after-discount calculations in detail.
- Set a campaign window. Give seasonal promotions a start and end time rather than relying on someone to disable the rule manually.
- Write the customer-facing message. Keep it literal: “Free travel cleanser added on orders over $75.”
The gift should remain an active Shopify product so it can be added as a real cart line. Track its inventory even if customers never buy it at full price. That prevents the campaign from promising stock you cannot fulfill.
How to automatically add a free gift to the Shopify cart with AutoCart
The example below adds one travel-size cleanser when the qualifying merchandise subtotal reaches $75. The same sequence works for a gift triggered by a product, collection, quantity, or customer tag.
1. Install AutoCart and create a rule
Install AutoCart from the Shopify App Store, open the app from Shopify admin, and create a new cart rule.
Give the rule an internal name that describes the offer and its timing, such as $75 cleanser gift — holiday 2026. A precise name matters when several promotions are active and you need to diagnose which rule added a product.
2. Set the qualifying condition
For this example, choose cart value threshold as the trigger and enter $75. Use the campaign terms you prepared to configure which merchandise qualifies.
For a product-led offer, replace the value threshold with a condition such as “contains any product from the Skincare Sets collection.” For a loyalty perk, use the relevant Shopify customer tag, such as `VIP`.
If you are unsure how cart-value conditions interact with discounts and excluded products, use our cart-total free-gift guide before enabling the rule.
3. Select the gift product
Choose free gift as the offer type, then select the travel-size cleanser and the correct variant. Set the quantity to one unless the published terms explicitly promise more.
Do not set the product's catalog price to $0 just to make the campaign work. Keeping a normal price preserves a meaningful product value elsewhere in your storefront and reduces the chance that shoppers can add unlimited free units outside the rule.
If shoppers should choose among several gifts, configure a customer-choice gift instead of auto-adding an arbitrary option. Our customer-choice free-gift guide explains when that extra step improves the offer.
4. Configure removal and customer controls
Enable automatic removal so the gift leaves the cart when the subtotal falls below $75 or the qualifying product is removed. Otherwise, a shopper could qualify, remove the paid merchandise, and keep the gift.
Decide whether customers may remove the gift themselves. Allowing removal is useful for products with allergens, fragrances, or other personal preferences. The rule can still prevent shoppers from increasing the gift quantity.
5. Add a clear cart message
Explain why the product appeared. For example:
> Free travel cleanser added — your merchandise subtotal is over $75.
Avoid vague copy such as “A special reward has been unlocked.” A specific message reduces confusion and gives the shopper a simple way to verify the promotion.
If your theme uses a cart drawer, confirm the message and gift line are visible there—not only on the full cart page. The customer should understand the addition before checkout.
6. Set the schedule and rule priority
Add the campaign start and end dates. If other cart rules can run at the same time, set their priority deliberately.
For example, a VIP-only deluxe gift might need to take priority over the standard $75 cleanser. Define whether both gifts can appear or only the higher-priority offer should fire. Our Shopify cart-rule priority guide covers overlapping-rule decisions in detail.
7. Save the rule, then test it before announcing the offer
Enable the rule only after you have confirmed the condition, product variant, message, schedule, and removal behavior. Use a storefront test session rather than assuming a saved rule works in every cart state.
Test an automatic Shopify free gift by checking the cart below and above the threshold, changing quantities, removing qualifying items, applying discounts, testing exclusions and low stock, and completing checkout on desktop and mobile.
How to test an automatic free gift on Shopify
Run the following checks in a private browser window on both desktop and mobile:
- Start below the threshold. Add $70 of qualifying products. The gift should not appear.
- Cross the threshold. Add another $10 product. The gift should appear once, with the correct variant and message.
- Change quantities. Increase and decrease paid-product quantities. The gift must not multiply unexpectedly.
- Drop below the threshold. Remove the $10 product. The gift should leave the cart automatically.
- Apply a discount code. Confirm the behavior matches whether your $75 threshold is calculated before or after discounts.
- Test an excluded product. Gift cards, subscriptions, or other excluded products should not qualify if your terms say they do not.
- Check the cart drawer and cart page. Confirm that the gift, its price treatment, and the promotion message render correctly in both.
- Proceed to checkout. Verify that the correct gift line and quantity survive through checkout.
- Test low inventory. Confirm what shoppers see when the gift variant is unavailable, and prepare a replacement or pause plan.
Repeat the test when you change themes, cart apps, discount settings, or the gift product. Those changes can affect the cart even when the AutoCart rule itself has not changed.
Common free-gift setup mistakes
Using only a native automatic discount
The word “automatic” describes the discount, not the product addition. If the shopper must add the gift manually, your campaign copy needs to say so. If the promise is that the gift will appear, use an auto-add rule.
Leaving the gift priced at $0 in the catalog
A permanently free public product can be discovered or added outside the intended offer. Keep its normal catalog value and let the configured gift rule control when it is free.
Forgetting the removal rule
The qualification needs to work in both directions. Add the gift when the condition becomes true; remove it when the condition becomes false.
Ignoring inventory
Free products still need to be picked, packed, and replenished. Shopify recommends maintaining adequate inventory for free-product promotions. Set a stock alert and define whether the campaign pauses or switches to a backup gift when inventory runs low.
Running overlapping rules without a priority
Two valid rules can add two gifts, replace each other, or create a promotion you did not budget for. Test the exact combinations that can occur and document which offer wins.

Automatically adding a Shopify free gift: frequently asked questions
Can Shopify automatically add a free gift without an app?
Not with Shopify's standard Buy X Get Y discount alone. That discount can make the “get” product free, but Shopify requires the customer to add the product to the cart manually. Automatic product addition requires custom development or an app built for cart rules.
Do I need Shopify Plus to auto-add a free gift?
No. AutoCart works without Shopify Plus and does not require theme edits. You configure the trigger, gift, and removal behavior in the app.
Can the gift be removed if the cart falls below the threshold?
Yes. Enable automatic removal so the gift leaves when the qualifying condition is no longer true. Test this by crossing the threshold and then removing a paid product.
Can I auto-add different gifts for different customers?
Yes. You can use customer tags to target a rule, such as offering one gift to VIP customers and another to everyone else. Give overlapping rules a clear priority.
What happens when the free gift is out of stock?
The promotion can no longer add the promised variant reliably. Monitor inventory, pause the rule before stock reaches zero, or prepare a replacement gift. Our out-of-stock gift-with-purchase guide covers fallback options.
Automatically add your Shopify free gift with AutoCart
The rule itself takes only a few minutes: choose the qualifying condition, select the gift, enable automatic removal, and publish a clear cart message. The important work is testing what happens when a shopper crosses the threshold, applies a discount, changes quantities, and drops below the requirement.
That gives customers the promotion you advertised without asking them to find a hidden product or enter a code. Start an AutoCart free trial on your Shopify store and build your first no-code free-gift rule.
