A promotion that starts late loses sales. One that ends late gives away margin. If you schedule a Shopify gift-with-purchase campaign in advance, you can avoid both problems—and avoid assigning someone to enable and disable a cart rule at midnight.
The dates are only one part of a safe launch. You also need to confirm the timezone, test the rule before it goes live, decide how it interacts with evergreen offers, and document a rollback. This guide shows how to do that with AutoCart so the right gift appears during the right window without a manual launch-day switch.
Why schedule a gift-with-purchase campaign?
Manual activation creates two points of failure: the person responsible can enable the offer late or forget to disable it. Scheduling replaces those reminders with a defined campaign window.
That is useful for any time-bound offer, including:
- A free sample during a product launch week
- A gift for orders placed during a weekend event
- A bonus product during a loyalty-member promotion
- A seasonal gift that temporarily replaces an evergreen offer
- A one-day promotion tied to a store anniversary
AutoCart supports start and end dates for cart rules. The AutoCart App Store listing describes this as scheduling a deadline. You can create and check the rule before launch, then let its date range control when it applies.
Shopify also supports active dates for native Buy X Get Y discounts. However, Shopify requires customers to add the discounted or free “get” product to their carts themselves. AutoCart closes that gap by auto-adding the gift when the cart meets your conditions.
Decide the campaign window in your store's timezone
Before entering dates, write the campaign window as a complete sentence: “The offer starts at 12:00 a.m. on September 10 and ends at 11:59 p.m. on September 16 in the store timezone.” This forces you to resolve the date, time, and timezone instead of relying on a label such as “launch week.”
Shopify states that discount start and end times depend on the timezone selected in Shopify admin. Check Shopify admin > Settings > General > Store defaults > Time zone before scheduling the campaign.
This matters when your team, warehouse, and customers are in different regions. A merchant working in London could assume a campaign follows their laptop clock while the store is configured for New York. The rule would then appear to start five hours late.
Do not change the store timezone simply to accommodate one promotion. That setting affects more than the campaign. If it is incorrect, treat changing it as a separate store-administration decision and review the downstream impact first.
How to schedule a Shopify gift-with-purchase campaign in AutoCart
The exact labels may change as the app interface evolves, but the setup logic stays the same.
- Create the gift product in Shopify. Confirm the intended variant is active, available to the Online Store sales channel, and stocked for the campaign.
- Create a new rule in AutoCart. Choose the free-gift offer type and select the gift product or variant.
- Define the qualifying condition. Set the cart-value threshold, required product, collection, cart quantity, or customer tag that should trigger the gift.
- Set the start and end dates. Enter the approved campaign window. Add an end date even if you expect to review the offer manually.
- Review other active rules. Decide whether the scheduled offer should replace, outrank, or stack with each evergreen rule that could match the same cart.
- Save the rule and record its settings. Capture the trigger, gift variant, date range, timezone, and priority in the campaign brief.
If the gift needs a Shopify discount to reach $0, configure and test the corresponding discount window as part of the same launch. A cart rule and its discount should not have mismatched dates.
Test the campaign before it starts
Saving the rule proves that the configuration is valid. It does not prove that the full promotion works in your theme, cart, and discount setup.
Test on a development store or other controlled environment when possible. If you must test on the live store, use the narrowest safe test window and restore the final dates as soon as the test is complete.
| Test cart | Expected result |
|---|---|
| Cart is below the threshold | No gift is added |
| Cart reaches the threshold | Correct gift and variant are added once |
| Cart falls below the threshold again | Gift is removed |
| Cart qualifies for scheduled and evergreen rules | Approved rule wins, or both apply if stacking is intentional |
| Customer removes the gift | Cart follows the configured removal behavior |
| Gift variant is unavailable | Store follows the documented stockout fallback |
| Campaign is outside its active window | Scheduled gift does not appear |
Run the scenarios on desktop and mobile. Verify the price at checkout, not just in the cart drawer. A product that appears as the correct gift but retains its regular price is not a successful test.
For the schedule itself, temporarily set a short test window and confirm the rule is inactive before it begins, active during the window, and inactive after it ends. Then restore the approved dates, save again, and have a second person compare the saved rule with the campaign brief. This catches the avoidable mistake of leaving temporary test dates in place.
How to handle overlapping evergreen rules
A scheduled campaign does not run in isolation. If your store already offers “Spend $75, get a free sample,” a launch-week rule offering a different gift at $75 may qualify at the same time.
Choose one outcome before launch:
- Replace: The scheduled gift takes priority while the campaign is active.
- Stack: Both gifts are added. Use this only when the combined cost is intentional and the offer copy promises both.
- Exclude: Adjust conditions so the same cart cannot qualify for both rules.
- Pause: Disable the evergreen rule for the scheduled window, then re-enable it afterward. Assign an owner and reminder.
Do not assume the newest rule automatically wins. Review the rule order and test the exact overlap cart. The guide to Shopify automation rule priority covers sequencing several cart rules when their conditions intersect.
After the scheduled rule ends, test the evergreen offer again. A campaign is not fully closed until the normal cart experience is working.
Build a rollback plan before launch
Rollback is the shortest safe path back to your normal cart. Write it before the campaign begins, when there is no pressure.
Your plan should name:
- The decision owner: Who can stop the campaign?
- The triggers: The wrong gift, incorrect price, duplicate gifts, checkout errors, or low stock
- The first action: Disable the scheduled AutoCart rule
- The second action: Disable any campaign-specific Shopify discount
- The fallback: Restore the evergreen rule if the campaign changed its priority or status
- The verification cart: Repeat one non-qualifying and one evergreen-qualifying test
- The customer message: Remove campaign copy if the offer is no longer available
Disabling the rule is safer than deleting it. You keep the configuration for troubleshooting, reporting, or a corrected relaunch. Record the time and reason for the rollback so support and marketing give customers the same explanation.
Launch-day and end-of-campaign checklist
Scheduling removes the manual switch, but it should not remove human verification.
At launch:
- Confirm the store timezone has not changed
- Place one below-threshold and one qualifying test cart
- Verify the gift variant, quantity, and checkout price
- Test an overlap with the most likely evergreen rule
- Check gift inventory against the campaign buffer
After the end time:
- Confirm the scheduled gift no longer appears
- Confirm any matching Shopify discount has ended
- Test the evergreen gift rule again
- Remove or update promotional messaging
- Record issues and results before reusing the rule
Frequently asked questions about scheduled Shopify gift campaigns
Can Shopify schedule a free gift promotion?
Shopify can schedule start and end dates for a native Buy X Get Y discount. Customers must still add the “get” product to their carts manually. A rule-based app such as AutoCart can schedule the campaign and auto-add the gift when the cart qualifies.
Which timezone controls a Shopify promotion's start and end time?
Shopify documents that native discount timing follows the store timezone selected in Settings > General. Confirm that setting before scheduling connected campaign components.
What happens if I do not set an end date?
Shopify's native discount documentation says a discount without an end date does not expire. Set an explicit end date on every connected rule and discount instead of relying only on a reminder.
Should I disable my evergreen gift rule during a scheduled campaign?
Only if the evergreen and scheduled rules should not run together and priority or exclusion conditions cannot produce the intended result. If you disable it, assign an owner to restore and test it afterward.
What should I do if the scheduled gift is wrong after launch?
Disable the scheduled rule, disable its connected discount, restore the normal evergreen setup, and run a verification cart. Keep the faulty rule until you document the cause.
Schedule the window, then test the edges
The safest scheduled campaign has four things: an explicit start and end date, a confirmed store timezone, a tested outcome for overlapping rules, and a rollback that anyone on duty can follow.
AutoCart lets you build that rule in advance, auto-add the gift when a cart qualifies, and stop the offer on schedule—without code or Shopify Plus. Read the complete Shopify gift-with-purchase setup guide, and add the gift stockout checklist if inventory is limited.
