To add a free gift to a Shopify bundle, treat the bundle and the gift as separate promotion layers. The bundle defines what the customer buys. A cart rule detects the parent bundle product and adds the gift. Shopify's discount settings then determine whether the bundle discount and the gift's 100% product discount can coexist.
The setup sounds simple, but three mistakes cause most failures: triggering on bundle components instead of the parent product, applying two product discounts to the same line, and leaving the gift behind when the bundle is removed.
This guide shows how to avoid all three.
Decide what should trigger the free gift
Start by defining the offer in one sentence. Examples:
- “Buy the Starter Skin-Care Bundle and get a free travel pouch.”
- “Buy any two eligible bundles and get a sample kit.”
- “Spend $150 across bundles and individual products to get a free candle.”
The first offer should usually trigger from a specific bundle product. The second uses bundle-product quantity. The third uses qualifying cart value and needs clear inclusion rules.
If you use Shopify Bundles, the bundle has its own parent product listing. Shopify states that product- or collection-specific discounts should target the parent bundle product; selecting only component products will not apply the discount to the bundle. Use the same mental model when choosing an AutoCart trigger.
Separate the bundle discount from the gift discount
A discounted bundle and a free gift can involve two different savings:
- The bundle sells for less than its components purchased separately.
- The gift receives a 100% product discount.
If the bundle price is already set on the parent product, there may be no additional bundle discount at checkout. In that case, the gift discount is the only active discount layer.
If the bundle discount is implemented through Shopify Discounts or an app, check its discount class and combination settings. Shopify applies product discounts before order discounts. On non-Plus plans, products participating in a native Buy X Get Y offer are not eligible for another product discount on the same lines; when offers cannot combine, Shopify can choose the best eligible discount instead.
The safe rule is simple: do not apply the gift's discount to the bundle line, and do not apply the bundle's product discount to the gift line.
Set up the Shopify bundle free gift in AutoCart
Use a specific-product rule when one bundle should trigger one gift.
- Create and publish the bundle. Confirm that the parent bundle product is active and available on the Online Store sales channel.
- Create the gift product. Keep it active, available to the required sales channel, stocked, and shippable where the campaign runs.
- Create an AutoCart rule. Choose the condition for a specific product in the cart.
- Select the parent bundle product. Do not select only the bundle components unless component purchases should also qualify.
- Choose the gift action. Select the product to auto-add and the intended free-gift treatment.
- Set the quantity behavior. Decide whether two qualifying bundles earn one gift or two.
- Configure removal. The gift should disappear when the last qualifying bundle leaves the cart.
- Set priority. If another cart-value or product rule could add a different gift, decide which rule wins.
- Publish the customer message. Name the qualifying bundle and any limit.
- Test the complete cart and checkout path. Include discount codes, cart edits, and accelerated payment paths used by your store.
AutoCart adds the product based on the rule; Shopify's discount system controls how prices and compatible discounts are applied. Confirm the final line prices at checkout rather than relying only on the cart drawer.
Test parent products and bundle components separately
A fixed bundle might contain cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. A customer can also buy those products individually.
Your rule should answer:
- Does the parent bundle qualify?
- Do the three individual component products qualify when bought together?
- Does a component added outside the bundle count twice?
- What happens when the bundle quantity changes from one to two?
- What happens when one bundle component becomes unavailable?
If the offer is tied to the bundle product, the individual components should not trigger it merely because the cart looks equivalent. This keeps the promotion measurable and prevents unexpected gifts when shoppers assemble their own cart.
Avoid double-discounting the cart
Target the correct product
Apply a bundle-specific discount to the parent bundle product. Apply the gift discount to the gift. Avoid broad collection discounts that include both unless the combination is intentional.
Check reciprocal combination settings
Shopify requires compatible discounts to allow each other's classes. If one side does not permit the combination, the expected pair may not apply.
Exclude the gift from order logic where needed
An order-level discount can sometimes affect the gift line or change the qualifying subtotal. Decide whether eligibility is measured before or after discounts, then use the same basis in the cart message and rule.
Do not stack product discounts on the same bundle line by accident
Shopify Plus has broader support for multiple product discounts on the same item. Other plans have tighter restrictions, particularly around Buy X Get Y products. Test on your actual plan and checkout configuration.

Run this bundle-and-gift QA checklist
Test at least these carts:
| Test | Expected result |
|---|---|
| One qualifying bundle | One gift is added |
| Bundle removed | Gift is removed |
| One component bought separately | No gift, unless intentionally eligible |
| All components bought separately | No gift for a parent-product-only rule |
| Two qualifying bundles | One or two gifts according to the published limit |
| Qualifying bundle plus discount code | Bundle and gift pricing match combination settings |
| Gift out of stock | Campaign follows the fallback you planned |
| Bundle unavailable in a market | No broken promise or unavailable gift |
Repeat the test in the cart drawer, cart page, and checkout. Shopify recommends placing a test order or taking a cart through checkout to verify discount combinations.
Common Shopify bundle free-gift mistakes
- Triggering on components instead of the parent bundle. This can reward unrelated individual purchases.
- Using a cart threshold that includes the gift. The added product should never help satisfy its own rule.
- Forgetting the reverse path. Removing the bundle must remove the gift.
- Running overlapping rules without priority. A bundle rule and a storewide threshold can add two gifts unexpectedly.
- Assuming the bundle price is a discount code. A fixed bundle price and a checkout product discount are different mechanisms.
- Testing only one discount code. Test every active automatic discount and the most-used codes.
- Ignoring inventory. Bundle components and the gift all need enough stock for the promoted volume.
If multiple rules can fire, use the Shopify automation rule-priority guide to define the winner.
Keep the offer architecture simple
Use the parent bundle product as the trigger, keep the bundle and gift discounts on separate lines, and configure automatic removal. That structure is easier to explain, test, and report than a broad cart rule with overlapping discounts.
AutoCart lets you detect the qualifying bundle and auto-add the gift without theme edits. Shopify remains responsible for applying the discount combination at checkout, so the final test should always happen there.
