You may already know exactly which customers should receive a gift: wholesale buyers, event attendees, ambassadors, support-recovery customers, or members of a private campaign. The difficult part is making the offer appear only for those people, without distributing a discount code or checking every order manually.
A Shopify free gift customer tag rule solves that eligibility problem. Shopify stores the customer label, and AutoCart uses that label as a cart condition. When an eligible, signed-in customer shops, the gift is added automatically; when the tag is absent, the rule does nothing.
This guide focuses on the technical setup: how to choose a tag, create a matching Shopify customer segment, configure the AutoCart rule, and verify both eligible and ineligible paths.
This guide is for campaign-defined audiences—such as event attendees, ambassadors, wholesale buyers, or recovery cases. For lifecycle audiences, use our guides to rewarding VIP customers on Shopify or welcome gifts for first-time Shopify customers.
What you need before you start
Prepare these four things:
- A customer tag with one clear meaning, such as `gift-fall-2026`
- At least one test customer who has that tag
- A gift product that is active and available to the relevant sales channel or market
- AutoCart installed on your Shopify store
Use a campaign-specific tag instead of a broad label such as `special` or `customer`. A descriptive tag makes the rule easier to audit and less likely to overlap with an unrelated promotion.
Step 1: Choose how customers become eligible
A tag is the final signal AutoCart reads, but you still need to decide who receives it. There are two practical approaches.
Apply the tag directly
Use this approach for a small, known list—for example, customer-service recovery cases or invited event attendees.
- In Shopify admin, go to Customers.
- Open a customer profile.
- In the Tags section, add the campaign tag, such as `gift-fall-2026`.
- Save the customer.
For a prepared customer list, select multiple customer records and use Shopify's bulk actions to add the same tag.
Build a dynamic customer segment first
Use a segment when eligibility should follow customer data rather than a hand-picked list. Shopify customer segments are dynamic: customers enter or leave as their data changes.
In Shopify admin, go to Customers → Segments, create a segment, and define the criteria. For example:
```text
amount_spent >= 500 AND number_of_orders >= 3
```
This query identifies customers who have spent at least 500 in your store currency and placed at least three orders. Save it with an operational name such as High-value gift eligibility—Fall 2026.
Shopify segments and customer tags are related, but they are not interchangeable. A segment is a live saved query; a tag is a value stored on the customer record. AutoCart's customer-tag condition needs the tag. After validating the segment, select its customers and apply `gift-fall-2026` in bulk, or use an approved workflow to keep the tag synchronized with the segment.
A one-time bulk action is only a snapshot. New customers who later enter the segment will not gain the tag automatically, and customers who leave the segment will keep it. An automated workflow therefore needs to handle both directions: add the tag when a customer qualifies and remove it when the customer no longer qualifies.
If your source segment is itself tag-based, Shopify supports this syntax:
```text
customer_tags CONTAINS 'gift-fall-2026'
```
Shopify supports this segment syntax. Tags are not case sensitive in Shopify segment filters, but consistent lowercase naming makes maintenance easier.
Choose the right eligibility method
The best method depends on how often the audience changes and how much manual upkeep the campaign can tolerate. Use this comparison when planning an automatic gift for a customer segment.
| Eligibility method | Best for | How it updates | How eligibility ends | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct customer tag | Small, known lists and support-recovery cases | A team member adds the tag | A team member removes the tag | Manual steps are missed |
| Saved segment plus bulk tag | One-time campaigns with a reviewed audience | The segment updates, but the applied tag does not | Remove the tag in bulk after the campaign | The tag becomes stale after the snapshot |
| Automated segment-to-tag workflow | Evergreen or frequently changing audiences | A workflow adds tags for new qualifiers | The workflow removes tags from customers who leave | One-way synchronization leaves old customers eligible |
Step 2: Create a Shopify free gift customer tag rule
Once your test customer has the tag, configure the cart behavior. If the app is not set up yet, install and configure AutoCart first.
AutoCart labels can change as the app evolves. In the current rule builder, choose the customer-tag eligibility condition and the free-gift action; if your screen uses slightly different wording, match the condition and action by function.
- Open AutoCart from Shopify admin.
- Go to Rules and select Create rule.
- Give the rule an operational name, such as Tagged customer gift—Fall 2026.
- Select the customer-tag condition.
- Enter the exact tag used on the customer record: `gift-fall-2026`.
- Choose the product and variant to use as the free gift.
- Configure it as a free-gift offer.
- If your rule-builder version offers customer-facing messaging, add copy such as: Your customer gift has been added.
- Review removal and offer-combination behavior available in your current rule settings.
- Save and enable the rule.
If you are new to the app's condition-and-action model, start with the Shopify cart rules guide. For stores with several promotions, use rule priority to control overlapping Shopify cart offers.
Step 3: Add optional cart requirements
The customer tag answers who is eligible. You can add cart conditions to define when the gift should appear.
For example, a tagged customer might receive the gift only when:
- The cart total reaches $75
- The cart contains a product from a specific collection
- The cart contains at least two qualifying products
- The campaign is inside a scheduled date range
Keep the logic explicit. A customer-tag-only rule means every tagged shopper can qualify as soon as they have an active cart. A tag-plus-threshold rule means both conditions must be true.
Example configuration:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Customer condition | Tag equals `gift-fall-2026` |
| Cart condition | Cart total is at least $75 |
| Action | Auto-add one selected product for free |
| Message | “Your fall member gift has been added.” |
| Schedule | October 12–31, 2026 |
This structure keeps audience eligibility separate from purchase requirements, which makes troubleshooting much faster.
Step 4: Test your customer-tag gift rule
Do not verify only the successful path. A targeted gift rule is correct only when it adds the gift for the right customer and withholds it from everyone else.
Test the eligible path
- Add `gift-fall-2026` to a test customer.
- Sign in to the storefront as that customer.
- Build a cart that meets any additional requirements.
- Confirm the correct product and variant are added at the intended price.
- Change the cart so it no longer qualifies and confirm AutoCart removes the gift if that behavior is enabled.
Test the ineligible path
- Remove the tag from the test customer, or use a second untagged account.
- Rebuild the same qualifying cart.
- Confirm that the gift and campaign message do not appear.
Also test mobile and your store's cart drawer if it behaves differently from the full cart page. Use a fresh session after changing a customer tag so you are not reading stale account or cart state.
Why the shopper must be identifiable
Customer-specific eligibility depends on Shopify knowing which customer is shopping. If a tagged customer visits anonymously and has not signed in or otherwise been identified by the storefront, a customer-tag rule might not be able to match them yet.
Set expectations in the campaign message that sends customers to the store: ask recipients to sign in with the account that received the offer. Then test the exact journey from that message through cart creation, not just an already authenticated admin test account.
This is the main difference between a customer-specific promotion and a public cart threshold. A public threshold can be evaluated from cart contents alone; a tagged offer also requires customer identity.
Common setup mistakes
- Using a vague or reused tag. A tag such as `vip` may already power another rule. Use a campaign-specific label unless the gift is deliberately permanent.
- Assuming a saved segment automatically becomes an AutoCart condition. Create or synchronize a customer tag that the rule can evaluate.
- Testing only while signed in. Also test an anonymous session so you understand what the recipient sees before login.
- Forgetting the negative test. Remove the tag and confirm the gift disappears.
- Leaving old eligibility in place. Remove expired tags, schedule the rule, or disable it at campaign end.
- Ignoring inventory and markets. Confirm the gift variant is available wherever eligible customers can shop.
- Letting rules compete silently. Decide whether the tagged gift stacks with other offers, then set priority intentionally.
How to maintain a tag-based gift campaign
For a one-time campaign, use a dated tag and schedule. When the campaign ends, disable the rule and remove the tag in bulk if it has no other purpose.
For an evergreen segment, document three items beside the rule: the source segment query, how the tag is synchronized, and who owns periodic checks. Review the segment count and tag population on a regular cadence. A dynamic segment updates automatically, but a manually applied tag does not remove itself when a customer's data changes.
Keep the segment and rule names aligned. High-value gift eligibility—Fall 2026 in Shopify and Tagged customer gift—Fall 2026 in AutoCart are much easier to trace than two unrelated internal labels.
Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify automatically add a free gift based on a customer tag?
Yes. To add a free gift based on a Shopify customer tag, tag the eligible customer, create an AutoCart rule that matches that tag, choose the gift product, and test the rule with both tagged and untagged accounts. The shopper must be identifiable for the customer-specific condition to match.
- Tag the eligible customer.
- Match the tag in AutoCart.
- Select the gift and any cart threshold.
- Test eligible and ineligible accounts.
Can I use a Shopify customer segment instead of a tag?
A segment is useful for defining and reviewing the audience, but AutoCart's customer-tag condition needs a tag on the customer record. Apply a shared tag to the segment's customers or use an approved workflow to synchronize segment eligibility to that tag.
Will the gift appear for a tagged customer who is not signed in?
Customer-tag rules depend on the storefront identifying the shopper. Ask campaign recipients to sign in, and test the logged-out-to-logged-in journey on your theme.
Can I require a minimum spend as well as a customer tag?
Yes. Combine the customer-tag condition with a cart-value condition. The shopper must satisfy both before the gift is added.
How do I stop the same customer from receiving the gift forever?
Use a dated campaign tag, remove the tag after redemption with your customer workflow, add campaign dates, or combine those controls. A customer tag records eligibility, not redemption state. A one-per-customer offer therefore needs a workflow or another persisted signal that changes after redemption. The appropriate method depends on whether the offer is one-time or recurring.
Turn customer eligibility into an automatic cart experience
The reliable setup is a short chain. Define the audience, place one unambiguous tag on eligible customer records, let AutoCart read that tag, and test both sides of the rule. That gives you a targeted automatic gift for a customer segment without sharing a public code or manually editing orders.
A Shopify free gift customer tag rule works best when its audience, identity requirement, cart conditions, and end date are documented together.
