When a Shopify free gift does not appear, the rule is only one possible cause. The cart may be below the qualifying threshold after discounts. The gift variant may be unavailable in the shopper's market. A theme cart drawer may not refresh after the app changes the cart. Or the shopper may have skipped the storefront cart by using an accelerated checkout.
Work through the checks below in order. Start with the offer logic, then verify the gift product, storefront, and checkout path. Change one thing at a time and retest in a private browser window so an old cart does not hide the real problem.
Quick diagnosis: match the symptom to the likely cause
| Symptom | Check first |
|---|---|
| Gift never appears | Rule status, dates, trigger, gift availability |
| Gift appears only before a discount | Threshold basis and discount combination |
| Gift appears on the cart page but not in the cart drawer | Theme/app embed and cart refresh |
| Gift works in one country only | Shopify Markets publication and inventory |
| Gift disappears at checkout | Discount compatibility and checkout path |
| Gift remains after the qualifying item is removed | Automatic removal and overlapping rules |
| Gift works in normal checkout but not Shop Pay | Accelerated-checkout path and cart visibility |
1. Is the free-gift rule active and inside its schedule?
Confirm that the rule is enabled, its start time has passed, and its end time has not. Check the store time zone as well as your own. A campaign scheduled for midnight in a different time zone can look broken for several hours.
If you duplicated an older rule, verify that the copy is active and that the original is not competing with it. Give scheduled rules distinct names that include the offer and date range.
2. Does the test cart actually meet every condition?
Read the conditions as a checklist. A rule may require a minimum cart value, a particular product, a customer tag, a quantity, or several conditions together.
Test with the simplest qualifying cart first. Then try a cart just below the threshold. If both carts behave the same way, the trigger is probably not being evaluated as expected.
For a product-based rule, confirm the exact product or variant selected in the condition. Product IDs and variant IDs are different. A rule aimed at one 500 ml variant should not be expected to fire for the 250 ml variant of the same product.
3. Is the threshold calculated before or after discounts?
A $100 cart can fall below a $100 gift threshold after a discount code or automatic discount is applied. Decide whether your campaign should qualify shoppers using the subtotal before discounts or the discounted amount, then make the rule and storefront message agree.
Test at least four carts:
- Just below the threshold without a discount
- Exactly at the threshold without a discount
- Above the threshold before a discount but below it afterward
- Above the threshold after the discount
For a deeper threshold QA plan, use the free-gift threshold before-or-after-discounts guide.
4. Is the gift product and selected variant available?
Open the gift product in Shopify admin and verify that it is active, published to the Online Store, and has an available variant. If Shopify tracks inventory, confirm that stock is available at a location that can fulfill online orders.
Also check the exact variant configured in the gift rule. A product can appear available while the selected color or size is sold out. Do not disable inventory tracking simply to force a gift into the cart; replace the unavailable gift or define a deliberate stockout fallback.
5. Is the gift published in the shopper's market?
If the offer works in your home market but not abroad, inspect Shopify Markets settings. The gift must be available to the relevant market and sales channel. Product catalogs, regional publication, inventory, and currency-specific storefront behavior can make a valid rule fail for only part of your audience.
Test from each market the campaign targets rather than assuming a domestic test covers every region. The Shopify Markets gift-with-purchase guide has a market-by-market checklist.
6. Are native discounts being mistaken for automatic cart behavior?
Shopify's native Buy X Get Y discount does not automatically place the Y item in the cart. The shopper must add every item, including the gift, before the discount can apply. If the promotion depends on native discounts alone, a missing gift line may be expected behavior rather than a broken rule.
Use clear storefront instructions when the customer must add the reward manually. If you want the product to appear without that step, use an auto-add rule and verify the discount treatment separately.
7. Does the theme cart drawer refresh after the cart changes?
Many themes update a cart drawer without reloading the page. A cart app can add the gift successfully while the drawer continues showing stale contents.
Check the full cart page and Shopify's cart endpoint after adding the qualifying product. If the gift exists there but not in the drawer, the problem is display synchronization rather than eligibility. Confirm that the AutoCart app embed or theme integration is enabled, then test the theme's cart notification, cart drawer, and full cart page separately.
If you recently changed themes, repeat the installation checks. Theme configuration does not always carry from the old theme to the new one. See the AutoCart installation guide for the storefront checklist.
8. Is an accelerated checkout bypassing the cart experience?
Dynamic checkout buttons can send a shopper toward Shop Pay or another accelerated checkout before the normal cart page or drawer becomes visible. That matters when the offer relies on a storefront message, picker, or cart refresh.
Test the ordinary Add to cart flow first. Then test Buy it now, Shop Pay, mobile accelerated checkout, and any express button shown on the product page. If the issue is specific to Shop Pay, follow the AutoCart and Shop Pay troubleshooting guide.
9. Are two cart rules or apps competing?
Overlapping gift rules can add, remove, or replace the same product. Bundle, upsell, subscription, and discount apps may also listen for cart changes.
Temporarily disable other gift rules and reproduce the issue with one AutoCart rule. Then re-enable rules individually. If sequence matters, define explicit rule priority and document which offer should win when a cart qualifies for more than one reward.
Avoid testing by uninstalling several apps at once. That makes the result hard to attribute and can remove configuration you need later.
10. Does the gift reverse correctly when eligibility changes?
A working promotion must handle both directions. Add the qualifying item and confirm the gift appears. Then remove that item, lower the quantity, or reduce the cart below the threshold. The gift should be removed when the shopper no longer qualifies.
If it remains, review the automatic-removal setting and any second rule that could still be keeping the gift eligible. Test quantity changes, variant swaps, discount application, and cart reloads.
A repeatable Shopify free-gift test script
Run this sequence before launch and after every theme or rule change:
- Open a private browser window with an empty cart.
- Add a non-qualifying product and confirm no gift appears.
- Add the qualifying product or cross the threshold.
- Confirm the correct gift variant, quantity, and price appear once.
- Apply each allowed discount and recheck eligibility.
- Refresh the page and open the cart drawer and full cart page.
- Remove the qualifying item and confirm the gift disappears.
- Repeat on mobile and desktop.
- Repeat in every targeted market.
- Test the normal cart, Shop Pay, and other accelerated paths you display.
Record the cart, market, theme, device, and exact failing step. “Gift not working” is hard to diagnose; “gift line exists on `/cart` but the mobile drawer stays stale after adding variant 123” points to the right layer.
Shopify free-gift troubleshooting FAQ
Why is my Shopify Buy X Get Y gift not added automatically?
Shopify's native Buy X Get Y discount requires the shopper to add the reward product to the cart. It can make that item free or discounted after it is present, but it does not auto-add the item.
Why does my free gift disappear after a discount code?
The discount may reduce the qualifying cart value below the gift threshold, or the two promotions may not combine. Check the threshold basis and discount-combination settings.
Why does the gift work on the cart page but not in the cart drawer?
The cart drawer may be showing stale contents after an asynchronous cart change. Verify the gift exists on the full cart page, then check the theme integration and drawer refresh behavior.
Should an out-of-stock gift still be added?
No. A promotion should use an available variant or a planned fallback. Adding an unavailable item creates checkout and fulfillment problems.
Fix the failing layer, not the whole promotion
If your Shopify free gift is not working, isolate one of four layers: eligibility, product availability, storefront display, or checkout path. Change one variable, then rerun the same test.
AutoCart lets Shopify merchants define product, collection, cart-value, quantity, and customer conditions; add a fixed or customer-choice gift; and remove it when the cart stops qualifying. That gives you one place to inspect the rule while you test the surrounding theme and checkout behavior.
