You've got a working cart automation — spend $75, get a free gift. Then a customer stacks a 30%-off code and crosses your threshold without actually spending $75 of real revenue, or a subscription reorder triggers the same gift every single billing cycle. The rule is doing exactly what you told it to do. The problem is you never told it what to leave out.

The fix isn't turning the automation off — it's telling it what to ignore. Shopify cart automation apps like AutoCart give you two separate levers for this: excluding specific products from ever counting toward a rule, and ignoring specific discounts when the rule calculates cart value. They solve different problems, and most merchants only discover they need the second one after a sale weekend where the math didn't add up.

Two different exclusion problems (and why they need different fixes)

Problem 1: a product shouldn't count toward — or be affected by — a rule at all. Subscription line items that rebill monthly, already-marked-down clearance SKUs, wholesale-tier products, or the gift product itself are common examples. If any of these qualify a customer for a promotion meant for regular retail orders, you're giving away margin on orders that were never the target.

Problem 2: an active discount distorts the cart total your rule reads. AutoCart evaluates conditions like "cart total over $75" against whatever total is currently in the cart. If a customer applies a discount code first, that total shrinks — and depending on your setup, either the automation stops firing when it should, or a stacked promo makes the numbers behave in ways you didn't intend. Either way, the rule is reading the wrong number.

Both problems look like "the automation is misbehaving," but they need different settings to fix.

Method 1: exclude specific products from triggering a rule

AutoCart lets you exclude specific products directly in a rule's condition settings — so a broad promotion can still apply store-wide without certain items qualifying customers for it or being touched by it.

Common reasons to exclude a product:

  • Subscription products. A recurring order shouldn't re-trigger a one-time welcome gift or GWP threshold every billing cycle.
  • Already-discounted or clearance SKUs. If a product is already marked down, letting it also count toward a "spend $X, get a free gift" threshold effectively stacks two discounts on margin that's already thin.
  • The reward product itself. If your rule adds a free gift, exclude that gift product from also counting toward the qualifying total — otherwise a customer could re-trigger the rule by re-adding the item you just gave them.
  • Wholesale or B2B-tier products. Bulk orders on wholesale pricing usually shouldn't qualify for a retail-facing promotion built around a much lower cart value.

Setup steps:

  1. Open AutoCart and edit the rule you want to scope down.
  2. In the rule's condition settings, find the exclude products field alongside your trigger condition (cart value, specific product, or collection).
  3. Search for and add each product you want left out — this can be done one at a time or by selecting a collection of excluded items if your catalog groups them (e.g., a "Subscriptions" collection).
  4. Save the rule.

Once saved, the excluded products no longer count toward whatever condition triggers the rule, and the rule won't act on them even if a customer's cart otherwise qualifies. If you're running a gift with purchase promotion, this is the setting to check first if the free gift keeps appearing on orders you didn't intend to reward.

Method 2: ignore specific discounts when calculating cart value

The second lever controls how AutoCart reads your cart total, not which products are in it. This is what you need when an active Shopify discount is changing the number your rule evaluates against.

Setup steps:

  1. In AutoCart, create or edit your rule and set the primary condition — for example, "cart total is greater than $75."
  2. Choose your reward: a free gift, a discounted product, or a companion item added automatically.
  3. Find the "Ignoring rules" section in the rule's settings and toggle on "Discounts to ignore."
  4. Enter the discount's message or title text exactly as it displays in the cart — by default, this matches the title of the Shopify discount (e.g., "SUMMER30" or "Spring Sale").
  5. Save the rule.

Once configured, AutoCart evaluates your cart-value condition using the pre-discount total rather than the total after the ignored discount is applied. A customer applying a 30%-off code no longer accidentally drops below your $75 threshold — the rule still sees the full pre-discount order value.

The catch: the message you enter has to match the cart display exactly. A mismatched or outdated discount title (common if you rename a promotion mid-campaign) means AutoCart won't recognize it as one to ignore, and the total will include it again.

Which exclusion do you need?

Exclude products Discounts to ignore
What it controls Which SKUs count toward, or are affected by, a rule Whether an active discount changes the cart total used for threshold math
Use it when Subscriptions, clearance items, wholesale SKUs, or the reward product itself shouldn't participate A discount code is distorting the number your rule reads
Where to configure Rule's condition settings Rule's "Ignoring rules" section
Example Exclude your "Subscription — Monthly Box" product from a GWP rule Ignore "SUMMER30" so a gift rule triggers on the pre-discount total

Most merchants running a promotion for the first time only need one of these. If your rule is misbehaving on subscription orders or already-discounted products, start with product exclusion. If it's misbehaving whenever a discount code is in play, start with discounts to ignore. Some rules — especially store-wide GWP or BOGO promotions — end up needing both once real order data surfaces the edge cases.

Common mistakes when excluding products or discounts

  • Forgetting to update the exclusion list. New subscription or clearance SKUs added after the rule was built won't be excluded automatically — they need to be added to the list manually.
  • Discount message mismatches. If the text entered under "Discounts to ignore" doesn't match the discount's actual display name in the cart, AutoCart won't recognize it, and the exclusion silently does nothing.
  • Excluding too broadly. Excluding an entire collection when only a handful of SKUs actually need it means legitimate orders miss out on a promotion they should have qualified for.
  • Solving only half the problem. Excluding products but not discounts (or vice versa) leaves the other failure mode live. Check both if your rule is triggering on orders it shouldn't.
  • Not re-testing after a discount is renamed. Rebranding a sale from "Spring Sale" to "Spring Refresh" mid-campaign breaks the "discounts to ignore" match until the message is updated to match.

Excluding products and discounts: frequently asked questions

Can I exclude a specific product from triggering an AutoCart rule? Yes. AutoCart's rule settings include an option to exclude specific products from a rule's condition, so a promotion can apply broadly without those items qualifying a customer or being affected by the automation.

How do I stop a discount code from throwing off my cart automation threshold? Use the "Discounts to ignore" toggle in the rule's "Ignoring rules" section. Enter the discount's exact display message, and AutoCart will calculate your cart-value condition using the pre-discount total instead of the discounted one.

Why is my gift-with-purchase rule triggering on orders I didn't intend? The two most common causes are a product that should be excluded (like a subscription item or already-discounted SKU) still counting toward the threshold, or an active discount code changing the cart total the rule reads. Check product exclusions first, then discount exclusions.

Can I exclude subscription products from a cart automation rule? Yes. Add the subscription product to the rule's exclude-products list so recurring orders don't re-trigger a one-time promotion, like a welcome gift, every billing cycle.

Scope your rules before you scale them

A cart automation that fires on every order that technically meets the math isn't the same as one that fires on the orders you actually meant to reward. Before you turn a promotion loose store-wide, check both levers: exclude the products that shouldn't qualify, and ignore the discounts that would otherwise distort your threshold. It's a five-minute check that prevents a much longer cleanup later.

If you're setting up your first rule, pair this with our guide on increasing average order value on Shopify — exclusions matter most once a promotion is actually driving volume and edge cases start showing up in real orders.
