A Shopify free gift with a preorder or backorder creates two promises: the customer qualifies now, but one or more products ship later. Before launching, decide when the gift is earned, when its inventory is reserved, and whether it ships immediately or with the delayed item.

Shopify preorders use a preorder app and can collect full, partial, or no payment at checkout. Inventory reservation can occur at sale or fulfillment depending on the app. Shopify also documents restrictions for preorder purchase options, including lack of support for Buy X get Y discounts and accelerated checkouts such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. A separate rule-based gift therefore needs end-to-end compatibility testing with the preorder app.

Define the offer before configuring it

Choose one policy and state it plainly:

Policy Customer promise Operational tradeoff
Gift earned at order placement Qualifying preorder secures the gift now You must reserve gift stock for delayed orders
Gift earned at fulfillment Gift depends on the order remaining valid Customer expectation is harder to explain
Gift ships immediately Reward arrives before preorder Extra shipping and split-fulfillment cost
Gift ships with preorder One shipment in most cases Gift inventory is held longer

For most physical gifts, reserving the gift at order placement and shipping it with the preorder is the clearest low-cost model. It is not always right: a long lead time, fragile stock, or mixed in-stock/preorder basket can change the decision.

How preorders differ from ordinary carts

A preorder product carries purchase-option data and may use deferred payment terms. Customers can see preorder information in checkout and must acknowledge the purchase option. The preorder app controls important behavior such as payment timing and inventory reservation.

Do not assume a cart automation, discount, or fulfillment integration treats a preorder line like a standard one-time purchase. Shopify states that Buy X get Y discounts are not supported by preorders, and accelerated checkout support is limited. Test the specific preorder app, theme, payment path, and gift setup together.

Configure the gift product and inventory

Use a dedicated gift SKU and track its stock. If 500 preorder customers can qualify, your campaign needs a reservation plan for up to 500 gifts even if fulfillment is months away.

Decide:

  • Which location holds the gift stock.
  • Whether inventory is committed at sale or only when fulfillment begins.
  • Whether staff may substitute another gift.
  • What happens when the preorder is cancelled or refunded.
  • Whether gift stock returns to availability after cancellation.
  • How low stock pauses the promotion.

Avoid offering a gift from ordinary sellable inventory without a reserve. The item can sell out during the preorder window, leaving valid orders without the promised reward.

Use the gift-with-purchase out-of-stock guide to define the pause, substitution, and customer-support response before inventory reaches zero.

Build the AutoCart rule around stable eligibility

Where supported by the preorder setup, trigger the gift from the exact preorder product, variant, collection, quantity, customer tag, or cart value in the advertised offer. Configure one gift per order and automatic removal if the qualifying line is removed before checkout.

If a preorder app replaces variants, uses selling plans, or rebuilds the cart line, verify that the AutoCart rule still recognizes the intended product. Do not launch based only on a standard add-to-cart test.

For backorders that use “continue selling when out of stock” rather than a formal preorder purchase option, test oversold inventory and customer messaging separately. The cart may behave normally even though the fulfillment promise is delayed.

Decide how to fulfill mixed orders

A basket can contain an in-stock product, a preorder, and a gift. Choose whether to hold everything, split the in-stock products, or ship the gift with one of the fulfillments.

Use the Shopify free-gift shipping and fulfillment guide to check location assignment, packing slips, and split shipments for that choice.

Hold the gift for the preorder

This usually reduces shipping cost. Add the gift to the preorder picking workflow and make sure its stock stays reserved. Customer copy should say the gift ships with the delayed item.

Ship the gift with in-stock items

This can work when the order already needs an immediate shipment. Confirm the gift is assigned to that fulfillment location and appears on the correct packing slip.

Ship the gift alone

Use this only when the promotional value justifies an extra parcel. Include postage, packing labor, and customer confusion in the campaign margin model.

Test the complete lifecycle

Place real test orders in a safe environment or with a controlled product and payment method. Cover:

  1. Preorder only, below and above the gift threshold.
  2. Preorder plus in-stock product.
  3. Backordered product with overselling enabled.
  4. Full payment, deposit, and deferred-payment paths supported by your preorder app.
  5. Removal of the qualifying item before checkout.
  6. Cancellation before fulfillment and return of gift inventory.
  7. Partial fulfillment and gift assignment.
  8. Preorder date changes and customer notifications.
  9. Gift stockout while the preorder remains open.
  10. 3PL import, packing slip, and order edit behavior.

Shopify lets merchants hold an unfulfilled preorder and filter unpaid or unfulfilled orders. Use those controls consistently, but keep customers informed when dates change. Your gift message should never obscure the actual preorder timeline.

Customer messaging checklist

  • State that the order includes a free gift and name it if fixed.
  • Say whether the gift is reserved at checkout.
  • Explain whether it ships now or with the preorder.
  • Give the expected preorder shipping window.
  • Explain substitutions, cancellations, and returns.
  • Update the customer if the promised date changes.

Avoid “ships immediately” or “guaranteed” unless your inventory and fulfillment process support that statement.

Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify Buy X get Y be used with preorders?

Shopify's current preorder documentation says Buy X get Y discounts are not supported by preorders. If you use a separate rule-based gift, test it with your specific preorder app and checkout path.

When should gift inventory be reserved?

If the gift is earned at order placement, reserve it then or maintain an equivalent committed-stock process. Waiting until fulfillment risks giving the stock to later orders.

What happens to the gift when a preorder is cancelled?

Define the policy before launch. For an unfulfilled order, remove or restock the gift as part of cancellation. If the gift already shipped, decide whether its value is deducted, returned, or treated as a sunk promotional cost.

Document that decision alongside the broader Shopify free-gift returns policy so support and fulfillment teams follow the same rule.

Make the delayed promise operationally real

AutoCart can add the gift when the preorder cart meets your conditions and remove it when the qualifying line disappears. The remaining work is operational: reserve stock, choose a shipment, communicate timing, and test the preorder app through cancellation and fulfillment.
